Hello,

I'm going to throw this out on the forum and get some opinions. I am helping a friend sell a 1978 BJ40. The cruiser is in Costa Rica so that may pose a problem for some potential buyers. I have shipped cars and parts from Costa Rica to Texas with no problems. I currently own a BJ and there is no way you could convince me to go petrol. Personal preference I suppose.

If there is any interest here on this forum I will begin to compile photos and a list of parts. Will be taking more detailed photos over the next few days.

The cruiser has a lot of rust so restoration most likely out of the question. It has a strong running B diesel And tranny that could be a great mod for someone wanting to convert from petrol. Along with that it has many original parts that I have seen folks wanting/needed. (Barn doors, seats, all the hinges, Spare tire carrier, badges, doors, hard top, good windows, latches and other misc part some would expect.

I have two options:
1. Sell the whole rig as a parts cruiser and ship her to the states. Would make someone a great deal if interested.

2. Start tearing her down and sell the individual parts. With that said, I would adjust the price for items to include shipping cost to make it fair for both the buyer and seller. Easy enough as I can ship with Correos (local postal system), FedEx or DHL. Or better yet one could come visit Costa Rica with an extra suitcase and enjoy some Pura Vida and leave with the parts ;)

There are many cruisers where I live (coffee country) but 90% of them are used on the farms so they have no need or DESIRE to restore. If you live in Costa Rica and have an interest feel free to reach out to me.

I have taken more photos of the BJ40. I may have this cruiser shipped to Texas, if so anyone interested in parts?
The engine was over hauled in 2010 …. the rings, pistons, lifters, gaskets..the whole deal.
The diesel pump was done in 2008, new radiator in 2011, new generator in 2014, starter - 2008, alternator - 2009
- repacked and maintained 4 wheel drive 2014

I think this would be worth more in parts for the Tico's then the Gringo's :-)

Every body parts has rust/bondo on it and the B 4speed combo is not a hot ticket item here either.

I have sold a few B/H42 combos here and usually they sell around 2 K complete with all accessories.

Every body part I take of my crusty Euro trucks ends up almost all the time stripped for the usuable small parts and the rest goes on the scrap pile.

That was what I was thinking. I did however want to put the cruiser on here just in case anyone needed parts, including members located here in Costa Rica.

This was my first stop before looking at other options for the seller.

Hola,
I live in Esparza, C.R. and just bought a 1978 BJ40. I am looking for parts that are in very good to excellent shape. Things like a speedometer, dash knobs, emblems, seats, etc. Do you have these types of things and are they in very good shape? Thanks, Walt

I personally won't even consider shipping this to the US. Way to much rust. I would look at shipping some parts off it if you ship another vehicle. If the front doors have repairable rust there is a market for late model doors with the vent window. That steering wheel is off a 8/80 or later cruisers. Those long jump seats with the fold down legs if useable. I would also check which transmission transfer case it has. The shifter on the transfer case has transmission knob which is too large to fit on the pre 8/80 shifters. Could have a later transmission with a split transfer case. Hump doesn't seem to be modified for the taller five speed but if my chance it did I'll buy that.

I have decided to just part her out here in CR and not worry about shipping. Too many landcruisers around here that could use some of the parts. I will check with the owner on the transmission.
