Hello all, I have replaced the rear axel oil seals on my 77 FJ40 and they continue to leak onto the brakes. I noticed a slight groove in the axel shafts where the seal rides. Does anyone know of a sleeve kit that is available to slip over the axel to restore the surface so that the seal will not leak? This would be similar to a crankshaft sleeve kit for the flywheel seal on a V8. I sort of remember it being mentioned in a tech article in the Toyota Trails magazine. I have looked through some of my back issues and did not see it. I do not have a complete set, have loaned a few out and they have not been returned.

Thanks

hmmmmm. i don't know about a sleeve kit. I watched my uncle build one up by braising it with an acetelyne torch and then emery papering it back to smooth. maybe the getto jb weld would work? good luck.

What you're looking for is called a Speedy Sleeve and Spector Off Road has a variety. Go to sor.com and search the on-line catalog.

Rear Axel Seal Groove

Pete, thanks for the info I called SOR and they do not have a Speedy Sleeve that will fit. I will keep looking - I am sure that I have heard of one that fits. Used axel is $120 for each side SOR price.
