Okay, I took my 87 Cruiser to a toyota repair shop bacause it was running very poorly and they say I need a new carb. The fuel is draining out of the carb along with other problems and they quoted $1400 for a new carb and labor. Is there any place that I can find one for less money?? Please help!

I can ship you one that has been rebuilt to function better than new, for significantly less money. PM for info.

Yep-I'll send you a working carb off my FJ60 for half that amount!

Best option, though, is to get yours rebuilt by Jim.

Did they bend you over before they told you the price? Also Mark's Off Road, ie Mark does a very meticulous rebuild at very good pricing. Use search function, it will tell you the same. I had a 40 carb rebuilt and it never ran better. I'm going to get him to do the 60 just as preventitive measure

One of the leafs was cracked on the DS front leaf spring and they also wanted $1500 to install new leafs in the front. WTF?? Thanks for all the replies. Jim, sent you a pm.

I would say get a hold of Mark, marks Offroad and let him help...also where is this business so that no one else gets had???

Definitely name the shop... They must think you are a real sucker.. I'd be $issed

One thing is clear, you need a different shop. For $1500 you could buy an entire OME syspension for your FJ60 and install it yourself.

For $400, you could get custom Alcan springs for the front and install them yourself.

Is the shop you are dealing with known in the Cruiser world? They are really charging a ton of $. My guess is they want to stick to fixing your Camry and are hoping you take your old rusty truck somewhere else.

Toyota Only Service (TOS) in Sacramento, CA. Very nice people but who can afford a $1400 carburetor in a 1987 vehicle? I'm new to Land Cruisers but those prices sounded ridiculous. I've looked at the OME/Dakar setup and there's no way I was going to pay that for only the stock front leaf springs! I used to have Land Rovers (2 Discos and Range Rover Classic) with OME coils and shocks so I'm familiar with the quality. Then again, I got the FJ60 to get away from those trucks hoping for better reliability.

That is high. But they probably just called the dealer and got a price of a new carb from dealer plus 2 hours labor. The dealer has to be like $700-1000 for a new carb.

I'm sure that's what they did. Still not planning on spending that much money on a carburetor. I appreciate all the help. Thanks

you definately steped up to reliabilty leaving the rovers. Stay around this site and spend time here and with a local cruiser group and you will learn and save tons of $!!!

DIY! Learn a little and you will learn alot obout your vehicle.

If you are local to Sacramento, you should hook up with (us) the Norcal Wagons. We'll even help you install a suspension. I have a set of FJ60 springs you can have cheap if you want to stay stock.

If you want, I also have an FJ60 carb that you could send as a core to Jim Chenoweth, and you could give me your old one when it gets here so I keep a core. His rebuilds are great (he did my FJ40s carb) and waaaay less than your quote from Toyotas only. Mark of Mark's Offroad is an interesting guy, and I'm sure would do a great job on your carb as well, but I've not personally used his services.

The TOS guys are pretty nice guys and I got a smog test there. They wanted to charge me $75 to reset the timing during the test. I told them I could do it myself in 5 minutes and they ended up setting it for $20 so I could complete the smog test and get out of there.

Your other (BEST) option is to go to MUDRAK CUSTOM CRUISERS in Sonoma. Gary does good work at fair (not real cheap) prices.

When I needed to fix my leaking intake manifold, I went to several "toyota specialist" shops in the Berkeley area. No body would touch my truck. The land cruiser engine is just too different from the compact toyota engines of the same era. I ended up doing the job myself (and it wasn't that hard). For more difficult tasks I've gone to Sonoma to visit Gary at Mudrak's.

I bought a used one from Coyote Cruisers and she runs like a top now! The carb is easy to change with a FSM, stubby 12mm, and a little patience.

Chenoweth Carbs

You won't be dissappointed in his carbs. I just ran the mileage numbers on my FJ60. Over 1789 miles of driving, I used 117 gallons of gas which computes to 15.28 MPG. But, I am running 33 inch tires and there is a correction factor of 0.865 for my rig, so the real mileage is 17.66 MPG. Jim did the carb and distributor. He jetted it lean for my altitude. My rig is desmogged but toting 300 lbs of bumpers. Rebuilt motor, all new plugs, filters and timing set correctly. People on this board are right that a well tuned motor is important.
