I replaced the plunger and contacts. The brushes looked OK (not that I really knew what I was looking at). Ground (new cable) is nice and solid (to the frame).

About 1 in 20 or 1 in 30 start ups, I get nothing. Whack the starter with a hammer and it kicks in and starts normally.

So, presumably it is the brushes, right?

Radd does not have them, nor does 4WheelAuto. I know better than to try G&S, (not that there's anything wrong with those guys, they just will not have it). No for SOR. I left an email for Neil at RooDogs (in Oz). Private parts does not have 'em.

I surely can't use the brushes from a 2F or 3FE starter...

Other than taking it to an electricial motor shop, what can I do or where can I go?

Anyone?

flat spot on armature? 2H replacement brushes Toyota #28140‑77090 punch it in here ~$90: ToyotaPartSales.com

HOLY COW! Hunert bucks for brushes!

I humbly suggest looking through a NAPA catalog for brushes you can adapt to your needs. You might get lucky and find some that are a direct fit. Or you can buy some that are too big and file them down.

Or visit a alt/starter rebuilder. Take your dis-assembled starter with you in either case to test fit the candidates.

I can buy brushes here for $12 and I think that's too high!! Heck, it's compressed carbon dust, for gosh sakes.

Later, man

Rick

find a local auto electric rebuilder. A lot of them sell parts as well. I can get most parts here from 2-3 shops and they are usually in stock. Ive bought alternator brushes, regulators, and all parts for starter rebuild.
If you cant find someone I can send you a number to call
