Gotta work that day. Next time.

I think your heep could make any route we take.

Alright, as long as you bring the straps.

I'll see what Lisa's dad wants to do, this is his first trip up since Lisa's mom passed away. If he's up to it we'll see you at 7-11. If not I'm probably having a drink and watching him and my kids bowl.

So did the run happen?

Just Shawn and us. It was a good trip. We stuck to the main trail and then went up to the radio towers. Then back into VC and some BBQ Tri Tip goodness. All in all a nice mellow day. About the only notable thing was a side trip we took to one of the other peaks near the one with all the radio repeaters. Everything was coated on one side with 1/4" of ice. Not Pogo Nip, solid ice. We saw a nasty cloud crossing the same peak from the 7-11 in Washoe City earlier in the day. I'm pretty sure it left the ice behind, when we were there it was clear and cold but not brutal like it must have been when the ice was formed. That's the kind of stuff that kills people in the Sierras.

Shawn and I both drove our 60's. Shawn did the whole trail in 2WD, not on purpose, because he forgot to lock one hub. Not that any of us have ever done that before. He even mentioned how hard the trail seemed without lockers at one point.

Our 60 did okay, I'm still not thrilled with auto lockers, the switch backs on the way down to VC were kind of a PITA. And the suspension leaves a lot to be desired in the flex department. But for the price I still feel like we did all right.

Very cool. Those dang hubs...

I never had a full-time locker in the front of any of my rigs, only the rear. I can only imagine how much fun they are. I know from when my ARB or factory ones won't unlock, makes turning a real bear. That is why I really like selectable lockers. Just so much easier on you and the drivetrain components.

Considering how much people are asking for totally stock 60's with over 200k miles, yeah I think you did very well.

The 60 power steering is a bit under powered too. I talked to Shawn about that and he told me it's pretty much the gear box, I had thought that a better pump might solve the problem. If I can find a cost effective fix for that and grind out the shift gate to get 2WD Low I think the truck will be a lot easier to drive.

If they had the same gear ratios I'd swap the Detroit from the front of the 60 for the ARB from the rear of the 40. It would compromise the ability of the 40 a bit but I think the overall gain would be worth it.

What problem does underpowered steering cause? I ask because I have a 60 steering box I may use. I'm still used to having no power steering. Do you not get enough assist, or is there some other problem?

Well thats basically it you dont get enough power to turn easy its like manual steering only worse i that problem on my 40 and im pretty sure im going to end up using the power steering set up out of a wrecked 80 series. Seems to me i remember someone else had that same issue with the front hubs on another trail just cant remember his name though HEHE now its my turn to give back some ROFL its all good though we all do that at some point.

Pretty much what the other Dan said. At low RPM's, like making tight turns down a set of switch backs, the steering is very stiff. With the front locker engaged it's almost impossible to turn. I've even noticed it in 2WD when I parallel park.

Is it more difficult than with no PS? I thought the ratios were the same, but I never really researched it either.

Can't really say. I haven't driven anything with manual steering in a long time.
