I have a 2004 stock rack. Will the standard roof rack work with roof top tents. If that's the case then it seems like it would be best to keep the standard rack due to weight and wind issues when not in use, not to mention the cost of a more rugged rack.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here....but my guess would be no.

Most OEM racks are rated to hold 150 lbs of "evenly distributed" weight. Obviously the roof itself will support the weight, but the rails and bars may not.

A standard RTT weighs about 120 lbs, include two occupants at another 300-350 lbs. Im sure it would far exceed what the it is designed to support.

If you check in the 100 series thread my bet would be you will be able to find a roof rack reasonably priced to accomplish what you're looking for.

Good luck,

Pat

Titanpat57 is right.

It will not hold the weight. A group of us went wheeling and a guy in an 80 had a roof tent on a stock rack. Just light wheeling caused all four posts to break.

Best to get a real roof rack!

Thank you guys, This is the information I was looking for. I may try rhino rack roof load bars. Slee sells them on their site. I'll double check before I go that route.

I think it should be fine.
The added occupant load is static load and the weight limits are for driving down - active.

Check that everything is uber tight - small star screws tend to loosen on the hundy factory racks.

Visit the AutohomeUs site and there is an explanation on this topic.

Though I'd chime in because it too was a concernof mine before I really got into the RTT biz.

Do what you feel comfortable with. Just enjoy the freedom of having a RTT!

I would not put a RTT on our stock 100 rack.

I'm using Rhino bars and they've good, very flexible, easy to take off when you don't need them although mine have ended up staying on all the time!

A good rack to get is the new BajaRack that they make for FJ Cruisers and the 80 series Land Cruisers.
You would have to call Mike or contact BajaRack to see if they will fit the 100 series or not.

Mike from AutoHome has one on his 80 for his Maggiolina Airtop tent, and I have one on my FJ for my Maggiolina AirLander tent.

The rack sits very low and is flat, and it designed for roof top tents.
Mainly for the Maggiolina line, but other tents will work too.

Mike is also a distributor of these racks.

BajaRack has an RTT flat rack for 100 series now. I have one. It's nice enough for the price, but it's not super thick and it's got a couple of quirks (slightly short center post, long enough to bang on the spoiler if you have that) that you'll want to make sure they work out.
