Hi peeps, my first post, so howdy doody all, and thanks for any replies in advance. I have used this forum in the past for the great resource it is.

I had tried to register on the lcool.org forum but having completed registration process, and having to jump through so many hoops like circus animal there, I've yet to be registered. Something about that process turns me off what seems like an exclusive community. Even if I am registered there I don't think I'll go back there on the basis of such blah.

Any way, on to my questions.

Currenty I drive a 1995 Toyota surf, 260k, 1kz-te. Lately I have contemplated buying a 100 series land cruiser, 4.2 td, 1hd-fte.

I've read much about these vehicles and understand the 1hd-fte is a bullet proof motor, assumeing oils have been changed, servicing etc.

All I could possibly afford would be something which has done large kilometers, ie 300k+ or so.

I would use the 100 series as a daily driver mostly. I'd need the space for work, and possibly camping. While the 1kz-te is alright, would it be a good idea to upgrade? Or might the 100 series be a downgrade? I like the surf, but on the road it could be better in terms of power and handling.

'Mainly' I am interested in fuel consumption. Would the 100 series 1hd-fte use more or less diesel than the 1kz-te? Or about the same? I realize in some ways it is somewhat gluttonous to drive around a 'tank' when I'm usually the only passenger, but I do like what I have read about the 100 series and can rationalize it a little for work related purposes. And how much fuel would an older 100 series use? Much more?

It's also good to have a vehicle which can perform in a range of area's rather than just a one trick pony. And at some stage a towing vehicle with adequate power may be required. I figure that the 1kz-te would be mostly likely to bust a head when it is under greater load, ie when towing the motor is under much greater pressure; that the 1kz-te is not quite up to the task, hence bust heads. The 1hd-fte would, I'd expect, be much more formidable.

The surf is adequate. Would it be unwise to aim for a 100 series, with such high K's, or stick with the surf? I can do most of my own servicing too. Part of the interest in the 100 series is just because I like it...though I've never driven one. That's still a reason lol.

And lastly, if one were buying a 100 series, 1hd-fte, what issues might one look for if it had high km's? I am aware, that such a motor can be like a ponzi scheme if they break. But so too, the surf is similarly afflicted, ie injectors/pump/head etc.

Any way peeps, thanks again in advance. I look forward to some replies.

All the best...alphalandy ;)

Nice first post....welcome to the forum!

Yeah, the registration process for lcool.org can be a bit problematic (read jumping through hoops), but it is well worth it. I am in the United States, but when I was thinking of buying a diesel Cruiser, I registered on that forum and the wealth of knowledge on the Australian diesel Cruisers was deep. I would say it is well worth being registered on both forums. Ih8mud definitely has the larger population to pull from though.

Regarding the HDJ100, you are talking about what many 100 series owners consider to be the grail specimen of the 100 series family. The 1HD-FTE is an incredible motor and placed in the IFS 100 makes for a great tow rig, daily driver, and overland type vehicle. Suspension upgrades would be warranted for heavy off-road use or greater weight carrying capability.

I know nothing about the 1KZ-TE, so unfortunately I can't offer any help on your questions between the two. We never got that motor here in the States, so some of our overseas (or more knowledgeable) members will have to answer your specific questions.

I can say that the 100 series is one of the best vehicles ever made by Toyota and you would be hard pressed to do much better. However, the fuel mileage, parts cost, and purchase cost all have to be weighed into the equation. I am looking forward to what others have to say and what your decision turns out to be.

Ah, thank you kind sir. I''m still yet to be registered on lcool.org....so maybe I'll persist and await registration. Fuel consumption is my main concern. ;)

Hey mate, i'm in NZ as well.

Currently on the same track, looking for a HDJ100 with 300 + Ks on it.
We're lucky because they do get very well looked after in this country.

Will be following this thread, I'd like to know what to look for.
