My UK spec factory battery question. Looking for input.

My 100 has factory twin left/right battery setup and 3 years ago I had new batteries installed.

The one on the drivers side will take charge, however when I put the Ctek on the left hand (passenger side) battery it looks to all intents and purposes, dead. Won't start to charge and reads empty. I tried recovery mode but nothing happens

I understood that charge would apply to both batteries - charging one charges both as the alternator is only attached to the LH battery

With charger disconnected, the RH battery reads 11.8 volts and the left also 11.8 v or thereabouts.

My assumption - before I go out to buy 2 new ones, is that the LH one is indeed dead, the RH one is the only working one and when I see 11.8v on the dead LH battery I'm actually seeing the charge in the other battery minus some cable resistance. And that the reason batteries are only reading 11.8 v and not 12.8 or similar is that one battery is dead and the other is being discharged by the dead one.

Does this sound right?

Can you still start the engine or not any more? The HDJ100 has 24V starter, so I'm just assuming that if one of the batteries was completely dead - the starter wouldn't crank.

Disconnect both batteries and charge the charge individually.

If your climate isn’t too cold, you can run it on just one good battery.

Replacing just the bad battery can work but is less than ideal.

yes it starts - but I guess it depends on what totally dead means? I'll isolate the batteries and test them individually - something odd is going on

I'm not convinced the starter is 24v - Rough Trax lists the replacement as 12v

A Brand New premium 120 amp 12V diesel alternator for the Land Cruiser 4.2TD HDJ100 / 101 at a fantastic new price and now from one of the most established European manufacturers and distributors, Kuhner of Italy - part of the DAS Europe Group.

I got both batteries charged - the CTeck charger failed to charge one of the 2 batteries which is why it appeared dead. It does that sometimes so I also have a cheap as chips ebay charger which is only 6 amps but gets the job done when the more expensive one doesn't

WIth both batteries fully charged, the car will start - turns over super fast, but after that both batteries read 12v and won't crank the car again. I guess both are screwed - new battery time.
