I have an 80 series.
However, looking at "upgrading" eventually to an early 2000's 100 series.

My 80 is pretty easy to work on, given all the online assistance on MUD.

What are you guys' opinion of the ease of one doing their own maintenance and repairs on a 100?

No big difference. If you can wrench on the 80-series, you can wrench on a 100-series.

So far all I've done is change the engine, transfer case, front, and rear differential fluids and upgraded the headlights. I haven't worked in a vehicle myself since the late 70's and that was a '69 Camaro and I lifted a 4x4 Ford truck. I guess I did my own maintenance on my CJ7 back in the 80's but generally speaking I haven't done much. I have a 2000 100 series and I think it's easy to work on

Piece of cake...so far.

Mud and a factory shop manual and wiring diagram book ease the pain...though all I've seen at ~160K has been routine maintenance.

The 100 series is well documented, has terrific community support resources here, and is straightforward to work on. No rocket science, simple electrics [very simple compared to me 2001 Benz ML430!], and very solid build. There's nothing you are going to do that has not been done many times by guys on this board.

Without Mud it would be significantly more difficult.

Even if you have to farm the work out to others, this site and all of the available info keeps people honest.

I know the problem, the fix and what the end result will be every time...80% of the money I've spent on my vehicle in the last year has been for personal preference upgrades.

I think my LX470 is about as easy to work on as any other toyota. It's like lego for big kids!
