Has anyone done this before? After changing from low to high and hitting the accelerator the LC wont engage high now but low is ok. I have located a second hand transfer box but wonder how much of a job changing it is. I dont want to lay the old girl to rest yet despite her 275k miles!

Thanks all!

Rohan

Best to take the two boxes down separately, as they are heavy. Take off the crossmember under the box and lower the whole engine/gearbox assembly at the rear. Check that you don't overdo it and pinch the coolant hose at the rear top of the engine. Then you can access the bolts between the gearbox and transfer, although one is a bit tricky- you need the right combination of sockets and extenders. 3/8" socket set is best - 1/2" is a bit bulky, also for the prop shafts.
All this after removing the prop-shafts of course. Can't remember if the exhaust has to come down.

The most frequent problem with the transfer box, is that the linkage is mal-adjusted.

Have you tried to engage center diff lock in high mode? It could be rear or front diff, or one of the axels that is disconnected

Hi there,

thats a great help - doesnt sound to awful and i hope the exhaust doesnt need to come down. Ill try that tonight bj - the fact it works in low but not high said to me it was the transfer box?

Thanks!

you were right, engaging centre diff msde it work. The front left axle is disengaged. changing that CV joint now but cant seem to get it off the shaft! thanks!

Well changed the CV joint and the brass bush and needle roller bearing and wheel bearing. Annoyingly the rumble at 50mph is still there. I also changed out the two ball joints and it feels much tighter. The top one was very shot!
