Hi Guys,
I'm an 80 guy normally but I just picked up a full 1kz te drivetrain to swap into my 81 pickup. It didn't come out of a prado (its out of a kzn130) but I figured you guys would have the most experience with this engine. The engine has 250000 Km's on it. I've read fairly extensively about the cooling problems that may be encountered with this power plant but other than that it seems like an awesome engine. While I have it out of the truck before the swap I was wondering what preventative maintenance you would recommend I do. Should I go ahead and replace the head gasket, timing belt, ect??????... I'm new to the diesel world so any info would be greatly appreciated

I'm in Valdosta, Ga, its just about to the Florida border. Why do you ask?
No one has any suggestions on PM for this engine?

They don't normally blow at the gasket... They usually crack the head...
I would remove the EGR system.
Remove the intake manifold and clean out all the gunk... you will find it full of what only be described as carbon grease (mix of EGR gases and oil vapour)
Cam belt is a good idea....
Perhaps a coolant flush and new thermostat...And get the radiator cleaned out .
The viscous fan hub also might need a top up of silicone fluid... Same setup as an 80...
And good quality coolant with antifreeze / corrosion inhibitors.
Then get rid of the factory dump pipe off the back of the turbo and put on something with less restrictions...
And then throw on a 2.5 inch dia exhaust system...
Push the boost up to 14 psi ish (just below boost cut)
Oh and install and EGT temp sensor so you dont run it hot.....

A friend of mine from Thomasville was interested in the same engine but it had already sold.

You may also get more feedback if you post in the "Diesel Tech and 24 Volts Systems" section.

+1 on kbushnz's recommendations.
but i would go for a 3" exhaust pipe (the 2.5" is just a bit bigger than the stock pipe). also, if it has an auto tranny, i would bypass the stock tranny cooler in the radiator and get a B&M atf cooler (thick one). i would also add an intercooler to reduce intake temps.
