Has anyone ever done this? I need some help deciding if it is worth doing or not. I want to install a steel tub like whats available thru Liquid offroad. Is there anyone else that makes these? Are they easy to install? I'm getting back into FJ40's after giving up 10 years ago. Its just something I can't shake. Thanks again and any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
John

Done it. Not that big of a deal. Easily seperates at the cowl, the floor is the only hook, but not that big either...

Post pics!!

Good luck!

Steve, Thanks for the words of encouragement. I was wondering do you have any pics of the one you did?
Thanks
John

Steve, one more question, where did you get your tub from?
Thanks
John

I do not have anything digital, (and all my older photos are packed in storage right now) as this was done in '95, and from the time I tore the body off the frame, to the time it was painted and back in the woods, was 12 days, still working a full-time job...It is nice to have a couple friends that you can count on to lend a hand..

Tub was a '77 that the cowl was a bit banged up from being in an accident, but the rest was very solid.

I have looked at the pictures of those liquid tubs, they seem really nice. I thought that there was a thread out here about them, and that someone had stopped by their place to see the projects, but I can not find it for some reason...

No problem on the encouragement thing. Tear into it, and get it done!

Good luck!

I got my 3/4 tub from Liquid Offroad. Can't beat his price and service. He's also spraying it for me. I haven't started the project yet,but i've done a lot of research on it.

I was interested in the 3/4 steel tub until I read CCOT article about how they will rust.

Well.....

That is their opinion...

Question for Hercdriver..

I am also considering a 3/4 tub replacement for this spring. I recalled seeing 3/4 tubs before at 4 wheel parts or something or Heart of Texas and then couldn't find it. Assumed they stopped selling or I just didn't recall the right website. Then this link gave me new hope.

So is the price still $3600 for the 3/4 tub? Does it come painted or primed atleast for that price? Will they spray the underbody for you with a good coating for an extra cost? And do they ship and if so what does that run roughly? Did you find any other sites in your research that also sell 3/4 tubs (1/2 tub won't work for me - I have rust damage all through the firewall also)?

Final question: why steel over aluminum? I prefer the steel and want to stay stock in my restoration but live in the NEast and worry about the rust damage though I do plan to take care of whatever I install.

Thx in advance for sharing your thoughts. Also good to learn from what others have already been through. Gotta love this site!

Regards,
Andrew

liquid Offroad WAS Heart of Texas Offroad if I am not mistaken.

I believe all those 1/2 and 3/4 steel tubs are manufactured by the same guy down in Texas who used to have his own website at www.vintagecruisers.com (not to be confused with Vintage Offroad). A couple of years ago he tried to sell his business on Ebay so I don't know if it's still the same guy. Rumor was that he also set up CCOTs original dies. Weird thing is that threads get started regulary on the various LC lists by people wondering about those tubs, but I've never seen a response by someone who actually has one installed. So it's hard to know about fit and rust resistance, etc. That's kept me from purchasing one.

OTOH, Andrew, I've heard endless good about the virtues of the aluminum tub in the North East. If you want carefree durabilty that you can take out in the salt and snow, the answer is probably obvious. I should say though, for my swiss cheese VT FJ40 I'm going with CCOTs steel parts, but in my situation I hardly get to take it out anyway, so the rebuilding is the fun.

Just my opinion,
Bill

You are correct. Robert changed the name from Heart of Texas Offroad to Liquid Offroad. He now has a shop and has a lot more produts to distribute.

As far as the aluminum tubs goes, I'm pretty sure they all sell aqula tubs from Canada. The tubs ship direct from Canada and the prices vary due to the distributors mark-up.

I've looked into both steel and aluminum. I have a '79 so the steel replacement tubs are kind of hard to come by. There are several threads that debate this in length if you do a search. Basicaly aluminum wont rust, it's light weight, bolt on, strong, and can easily be moved to a new project if need be, and costs less. Steel keeps your cruiser more "original", can be welded or patched easily, and is easier to paint.

I know of a better than average '79 tub that is being replaced by Bobby at the Cruiser Company in Little Rock, AR. If I hadn't already purchased my aluminum tub I would've seriously considered getting his tub. I'm not trying to do a full frame off resto. Just touch some things up and take care of a few issues.

Hope this helps

Jeremy
