Good Afternoon!

I am looking for some advice on an LC200 purchase. I am coming from a 2017 Tacoma TRD OR, I need more space for the family and have always loved the 100s and 200s.

Add for the truck:

Used 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser 4D Sport Utility $28,952.00 - VIN: JTMHY05J985000302 - Stokes Toyota Hilton Head - New and Used Toyota Dealer Serving Bluffton, SC

Other details:

1 owner truck, local to Bluffton SC. bought new at this dealer almost all service has been done at this dealer as well. some of the maintenance records are attached. It looks like the water pump was replaced recently, new tires and an alignment for what thats worth. I facetimed the salesman and he crawled under the truck and it looks really clean. I plan to go see it in person this weekend.

so big questions for the forum:

Is there any maintenance or service I should try and leverage out of the dealer that hasnt been completed?

how much negotiating room do you think I have on price?

take a very close look at the radiator, on the top where the part number is stamped. they have been known to crack at the base of the nameplate, typically around 140-160K miles.
may want to check the damper that selects between inside and outside air for the AC system. it is in the back of the glove box.
check the forum for details on the issue.

cycle the center diff lock, and make sure it engages/disengages freely. if it hasn't been used in a while or at all, they tend to freeze up.
main concern on these trucks at the mileage you are looking at:
water pump, radiator, starter, rusted KDSS valves, center diff lock switch/actuator failure.
Cruiser outfitters has reported seeing some rear axle bearings failing recently, maybe ask if the previous owner used the truck for towing.

it is a nice looking truck. hope it works out for you.

+1 on starter. Mine just went @125k. But i think they will all go through that (it it hasn't already). just go in knowing about it. $1500+ at dealer, because it is really hard to get to.

Thanks for the info guys! I saw a thread on the starter swapout and that looks terrible. The water pump has been replaced so that is a plus. ill def check out the other items as well.

It looks like they're changing the water pump and serpentine belt which is great. But while they're in there they should do the heater hose tees and the thermostat. On the second page, job 9, they mention changing a Element Sub-Assembly. What is that?

If there's no records on anything else then expect to do a transmission fluid swap, transfer case, 2 diffs, brake rotors and pads, and sparkplugs.

Also be aware of the cam tower leak, rear brake dust shields, and rear bearings possibly needing to be done. I haven't had these yet and I've just hit 140k this week. Everything else in the top 2 paragraphs I've taken care of so far since I got mine in May last year at 134k. If you're handy, don't worry too much, the forum has how-to's on a lot of this stuff.

I just picked up my 2009 a month ago with 124k miles and talked them into changing all fluids (coolant, brake, all running gear (trans + diffs), engine oil). They also recently changed the radiator (it blew up) and spark plugs. I'm worried about the starter but it hasn't given me any trouble or any sign of issues. I paid $29k for mine, and they threw in a set of new BFG KO2 tires also ;)

Whoa! Good deal @gtmotor where about are you? That’s a great snag on an 09. I am wondering if there is a way to “test” the life of the starter. With previous vehicles I’ve owned they more or less dropped dead on me with no notice. I’d hate to throw down this money and then need a starter in a few months

The dealer put the wrong oil in - should be 0W-20 synthetic, not the 5W-20 bulk they used. That alone would make me question the ability of that dealership to properly service a Land Cruiser.

HTH

damn well that is interesting for sure... Does not instill confidence haha

I'm in Arizona, the car has been here it's whole life so absolutely zero rust. The previous owner appeared to have never taken it off the highway either... the underside was extremely clean when I bought it (key word: was ;))

I love this truck so far, I think I'm starting to annoy everyone around me by talking about how great the Land Cruiser 200 is.

wow that gucci dude!

Update: I asked the dealer to put the truck on a lift and send photos of KDSS valve and a few other things yesterday, they said no problem we will get to it. then I got a call today that someone from AL is racing there with a deposit so it is probably sold. Kind of a BS sales tactic so we will see how this pans out. In other news there is a gorgeous 100 LC for sale in Charlotte!

Be careful, that may not be a BS sales tactic. I snatched mine up within 30 minutes of them listing it online. They had another customer say he was going to fly in from Colorado that evening to come get my truck (I heard them pick up the call). Finding a used, good condition, 1 owner 200 series is difficult.

TexAZ: I'm in Tucson.

Ya we will see. It’s a 2hr drive and I want to ensure the kdss isn’t rusted shut before I bother driving out as that would be a no go.

If Stokes in Hilton Head is anything like they are in Charleston, I don't know that I would trust anything they told me that required a value judgement on their part. If you want it, go see it. A bad day driving to Hilton Head is better than a good day almost anywhere else. Except maybe Charleston (center of the known universe)

I'd definitely budget for a new starter, mine quit at 105k. The cam tower leak is a low probablility failure, for the 2008, based on what's been reported here (not what has been guessed at, but what's actually been reported. Search the forum for the survey) Rusty KDSS, given that it's at the beach, is a real possibility. @Trollhole can give you some good advice on how bad that fix could be, in dollars and cents. He's in Mauldin.

FWIW, the LX570s are (right now) cheaper and more available. No KDSS problems to deal with and the interior is nicer. (personal opinion) If you want it, I think you have to pay them what they're asking. Unless you're willing to search farther afield than a 100-mile radius of Charleston.

LOL I can tell you’re early in your search if you think this is a sales tactic. The truth you will soon learn is most clean/good deal 200s are gone immediately. There are many people all over the country looking online constantly at these trucks who know what they want and have cash ready to go. Remember this is a very low volume, high demand truck, so don’t be so quick to think they’re pulling one over on you.

Ya I hear that! I have set up searches with alerts nationwide and rapidly becoming "one of those" haha. I dont mind flying out to pick one up and drive it back I just want to get all the details (like KDSS) up front before I go out to test drive. I am not in an arms race for one of these just yet, at least not one with 140K on it. there are 2 availabe in texas with about 100k miles on em for a tiny bump in price.

thank you for the advice! do you spend much time in chucktown? I hear ya on the LX570s way more common at a better price with lower miles, there is one down the road from me i will go drive later this week. My intent is to build this truck out and the non removable AHC gives me pause.

I looked for just under 6 months until my truck popped up... I had an alert set on my phone anytime a new one came up (actually found it from cargurus.com ). I saw it say: "8 miles from your location" and didn't believe it so I put my phone back in my pocket and checked it again a few minutes later, then I saw it was real and left work early to go put a deposit down :) So just be patient and you'll find what you're looking for! I considered an LX for awhile also but I didn't want three things: 1) Lower towing capacity due to different suspension 2) Higher maintenance and insurance cost and finally 3) The L badge
