So what do you think is a fair price? I like the color, interior is in great condition. The timing belt and brakes booster due brake failure has been done per lexus listed below the car fax. Looking at the Lexus services history this truck has been in for a lot little BS type things like TPS reading.

Carfax and dealer service records are just a small part of what I would need to know in order to throw out a figure. If you review the FAQ section of this forum there is a guide by Slee that is really comprehensive. Remember that Carfax only reports collisions that were recorded for insurance/legal reasons.

If the vehicle is out of state and this is an Ebay buy, good luck rolling those dice.

There's so much more as well. For example: what type of tires does it have on it right now? How much tread is left? If you are happy with those tires and they are fairly new that adds a few bucks to the value, but if you're going to go in a different direction you have to consider the cost of those in your budget. Are there dents? If so, do you care? If it's going to be a trail rig a few dents shouldn't matter. On the other hand, if you are planning to wax it weekly you will have to factor those repairs in your budget. I could make 50 more points, but it would be minutiae.

I would never go look at a car without knowing the ballpark NADA and Kelley numbers, but again there is a huge variability even in those numbers.

If I were you I'd put together a budget, then subtract all the work, parts, upgrades, etc. that you want to be done once you buy it. What you have left is your maximum price. See if this number is close to the Nada numbers and go from there.

Doc,

Thanks, I don't really care about the tires I am going to put 33's or If I can find a cheap set to wheels on CL then re-tire. No dings, dents one reported accident. In looking at the lexus damage comments "CERTIFIED PREOWNED PDI. - CERTIFIED PRE - OWNED PDI - CERTIFIED PRE - OWNED PDI. BODY HAS BEEN REPAIRED AT RIGHT REAR, BODY SHOP INSPECTED FOR FRAME DAMAGE, THERE IS A DENT ON RIGHT REAR ABOVE WINDOW NEAR ROOF LINE, NO ADDITIONAL REPAIRS NEEDED AT THIS TIME 30K HAS BEEN DONE AND 35K WAS DONE 1K MILES AGO TECH"

Which I was under the impression if they had been in an accident they couldn't be certified or was it a certified? I guess I assume the majority of 100 and LX's in particular are mall cruisers. In good to great condition other than me being a tight a$$ it's not a $$$ thing I am also looking a 08+ Sequoia's and 200's. Scratches just hurt less on the less expensive truck.

I think someone else might chime in about what it really means to be a "certified" used car (and opinions vary widely as to how much value to add to a vehicle that has been certified), but I don't put a lot of stock into it. I take it to mean that a qualified mechanic looked it over and made sure the maintenance was done, but I have no idea how hard it is to fail and not earn that badge. Besides, this vehicle was "certified" nearly 100,000 miles ago. There are a lot of gaps in that report.

Here is my recent experience: I bought a 2003 LX470 with about 182k miles. The pictures on Craigslist were deceiving and it was described as "clean." However, the price was conspicuously low. On arrival to his house I found that the driver's door was wrinkled and rattle canned and the back bumper is trash. The running boards were repaired with sheet metal screws. The owner said a "Lexus Mechanic" looked it over last year before he bought it and said everything "looked good." I did a quick inspection and test drive and found one vacuum hose disconnected and rotting, the AHC fluid was low, the tires were bald and the vehicle was over 2,000 miles and several months past due for routine oil change (this was done in December and the sticker was not a dealer sticker but rather from a Jiffy Lube equivalent (as far as I know not many Lexus certified mechanics moonlight at these sorts of places). There were other things as well that made me cringe. The owner had owned it for less than a year and had no idea this was a Series 100 or what a Series 100 was ("This is a Land Cruiser?"). Obviously, this sale has more red flags than a Chinese political rally, but I bought it anyway. Why? Because I wanted a project I didn't have to tow, and because I got it for a price that would leave lots of room for new parts and the cost of exorcising gremlins. The frame looks good, so I don't care about the door (hopefully more dents are in its future). The bumpers and running boards will be replaced with steel, so the big dent in the rear one only brought the price down in my favor. I probably could have talked him down a little more but wasn't in the mood to really haggle and wheedle. I am going through the whole thing with the assumption that it has not been maintained at all for a long time (so far the evidence to support this is strong: 6 of the plugs were Autolites and the other 2 might have been originals from the factory). But this is just me. I make the worst assumptions about sellers and their vehicles and it works well most of the time.

I am with you on thinking people are looking to screw/get the best of you. I have accessed the Lexus service records and see many omission in the car fax. I am guessing the seller (dealer) doesn't know much of the work that has been completed. My plan still includes a PPI from the dealer Lexus or Toyota after we settle on a price.

When I bought my 80, I set the process, agree on price, have a PPI at dealer and agree that if there are any significant repairs we would discuss a split. If the seller thought the split was too much a reduction they could say no. Dealer wanted $650 for a PHH, something like $275-$300 for an antenna.... couple other items for a total close to $1,600. We split it 2/3 from me 1/3 from him. Clearly defined in advance, I'll do the same with this purchase. I am also looking a very clean 03 that I can get for $13K two set of wheels one owner and all Lexus services with 160Kmile.
