Well DOT pulled me over today.
He wanted to make sure I was up to Canadian spec.

Long story short, I am not.
I will need some help here.
I will need some new lights.
Headlights and Tail lights.

Anyone out there have a parts rig?
Or an off road only machine and don't mind trading lights?
Anyone updrade there lights to new LED ones maybe?
As long as they are not cracked, and DOT approved, I am interested.

I also have a thread in the international section.
I thought I might get more help there.
I also just wanted to ask the 80's crowd as well.

Here is the thread:

OUt of interest, was this vehicle safety passed by the federal and provincial bodies. If so upon importation, you should have had the running lights etc all installed because the mechanic's job is to bring the vehicle to BC and CDN spec. This doesnt change the fact that you need some work done, however, you shouldnt have been pulled over in the first place. What gives?

Were you pulled over by a cop, the ministry of transportation Yukon, or was it a MOT road check that typically inspect commercial trucks on the roadside?

later.

Wow...and I thought CARB was tough...

Just a suggestion, but a little more info on what's out of spec might be helpful. For instance, you've asked people to trade taillights. Removing the entire taillight assembly - reflectors, wiring, lense and bulbs is implied. However, I suspect all you need are the lenses (2 screws - 30 seconds tops). I don't know what the story with the headlamps is either. What do you have - Japanese RHD lights? Japanese RHD lights with integrated yellow fogs? Etc.

Heck, I'll trade you for my headlights and deliver them to BC tomorrow if you've got headlights I'm interested in. My wife is leaving at 8am.

Doug,

I think Nick has the regular JDM headlight assemblies with inner H3 fogs and outer H4 low/high beams (the fog housing's inner, yellow covers might or might not be there, depending on what the PO did).

I think at least some of the LHD Euro-spec 80's might have come with the outer H4's and inner H1 highs. I found someone who would be able to get them awhile ago, with the headlight leveling function, but that was not cheap.

JDM headlights spray left. Not a whole lot of fun for incoming traffic. It also leaves the driver with too little light on the right hand curb where pedestrians may be lurking ready to bend your fenders.

It's better to replace them with local headlight assemblies. Makes driving a lot easier.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the help so far. I was at a wedding yesterday, and I am pretty busy today. Tonight when I have time I will read over all responses. All of your help is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Nick :)

For those who want to know. Nick drove to Fernie today to check out and measure my lights. His rear lights are OK as they do have DOT stamped on them. The headlights were a little wider than mine by about 1/4". Mine is a 97 and Nicks is a 1990. Different grill and headlight assembly. The signal lights are the same, just the headlights are different. I was at the ski hill when he visited so I did not have my camera to take pictures of the difference. Maybe Cdan would be able to tell what years had the different size lights. But damn those japanese lights sure do seem alot better than out NA spec lights.

Sean

I'm not Cdan (younger and a lot better-looking ), but I think the -'94 had the same headlights/grill with "TOYOTA" and '95-'97 had the newer, Toyota symbol on the grill and slightly different headlight and surrounding pieces (more/less chrome, etc...).

:flipoff2: Deja vu! :flipoff2:

nick there is a 93 sitting in a wrecker's yard in vernon and iirc the front lights were ok (not certain of that). import auto wreckers. i can get the # if you can't find it. the guy believes cruiser parts contain platinum and rubies but if you get a quote from Dan for new he should be willing to undercut it.

All right everyone.
Here is the update:

First off, the guys were really nice. Two of them liked land cruisers, and one was wanted to get one. They kept saying how impressed they were with its condition.
They did not hassle me at all. I talked with them for about 1/2 after. Real nice guys.

My headlights are not DOT or SAE approved, and I need to swap them. I also need to add daytime running lights. I am going to look for a kit for this, or maybe just wire it myself.

My rear tail lamps are good, as well as having side reflectors built in. No issues there. All my glass is good and up to code as well.

So now I am going to try and find some new headlights. As Mtnrat already said, my headlights are a different size, so I need lights from a 94 or older. if any one wants to trade let me know. Idahodoug, what year is your truck? Maybe we could meet one weekend. I will take pics of my lights soon with a tape measure.

So long story short, I am good, and they have no worries. Just have to wire up daytime running lights and installing the proper headlights. Other than that no issues. They said they have less worries (safety wise) about my truck, then they do about lots of left hand drives.

Thanks for all the help,
Cheers,
Nick

Hey Doug,

Yup, my headlights have the yellow fog lights.
They should fit because we are both pre 94.
Since your truck is a 93 if your interested, lets look at trading.
Where in Idaho do you live?

I am just over 1 hour drive from the border.
Maybe we could meet one day?

Cheers,
Nick

250-857-0977 import auto wreckers, vernon

BTW, I am not 100% sure the 91-92 lens assemblies cross over to a 93-94. You should confirm with Dan. The 91-92 body is specced as slightly narrower than the 93+ body (although that might be the different flares).

crappy tire sells a $25 daytime running light kit that takes 10 minutes to install and works fine. however, it uses a spark plug lead to trigger the lights so if you have a diesel you may need to read the packaging to see what they suggest.

How did you get it past the RIV federal inspection without daytime running lights? That is the first thing they checked on mine.

Thanks for the info.
I will look at Canadian Tire for one.
I also thought I could just run a wire from my "On" positition to the light relay. Then when my truck is on, the lights are on as well. As far as the inspection, I never did it. My importer had all the inspections done.

Hopefully someone on here can let me know about the lights. I am sure that if Doug and I go ahead we will measure up our lights before the switch happens.

Cheers,
Nick
