Well,

Got the brakes finished last night. We used a 92 4runner MC, with a 80 Series LC top for it. This way the brake level gauge still work.

It was a bolt on swap, with minor bending to the brakes lines so it would line up.

Used the Calipers from a 92 4 runner, also new rotors and had the drums cut and new pad also.

Had to grind the calipers just a little so they would fit, then used a hack saw to cut the brake shields, scoops, (what ever you call those...)

It’s a night and day difference! On the way to work this morning a suburban stopped short in front of me on the freeway, brakes locked up and I did a nice skid! Who knew a FJ62 could stop so well. :D

This is a upgrade I highly recommend doing. Iam really not sure If it was a hugh difference between stock or not. I’ve and the truck about 2 months and the brakes were never working correct anyway, so I can‘t give you a honest compare. FYI _Iam running 33 x 10's on the truck.

Beware, rookie comment below:

It's hard to believe that a newer model 4Runner has better calilpers/pistons than and FJ62? SOunds backasswards to me...

The 60/62 series trucks were never designed to handle 33" tires, the extra weight and inertia of these sizes make them difficult to stop.

Newer 4 runners had bigger tires stock, I believe, and were probobly over-engineered.

FYI you can also use older Toyota 4x4 truck MC's for the swap, they don't have to come from a 4skinner. I picked up a truck 1" MC for $15 from the junkyard, they wanted $35 for the 4skinner MC, and it's basically the same thing.

I plan on doing my swap in the next two weeks sometime.

So, any toyota truck MC will have the same bolt pattern as an LC? I just need to look for a MC with the a "1" cast into the side of it, correct?

Good news. I may be a proud owner of a 62 this weekend and just happen to have a pair of rebuilt calipers for the 93 4runner (from my old truck) that I was going to pawn off in the next few days...Glad I got to this post!

Trust me, in Atlanta, having more stopping power is a must!

The MC is a little larger, 1" bore compared to 3/4 (i think) on the FJ62, the larger bore holds more fluid. The pistons on the calipers are also larger 40mm, and the pads are also. I think the FJ62 were around 36mm?? So the larger bore is needed to have more brake fluid to drive the pistons.

I picked the 92 stuff just because my parts house had it, and it's used in a lot of TOyota applications.

Here is a good disscussion, with pictures:

Well, I'm not sure ANY truck MC will work, but I asked for a 94 4skinner MC and the yard suggested I also look at the late 80's, early 90's truck MC's, which happen to fit.

Good update. Actually the stock 62 is 7/8". Amazing what 1/8" diameter can do.

That's what I want to do with my front brakes, only with the DBA 4000 series slotted rotors. Gotta do it soon though. My rotors are coming towards the end of their service life...

Does it have to be 4x4 and a V6 toy truck?

I'm just heading out to pick up the necessary parts to do up my rig, but figured I'd ask here before running out the door. By 80 series "top", do you mean just the reservior cap, or the reservior and cap together? I take it the reservior and cap from my FJ62 won't work, huh?

The Rotors were just factory replacement from the local parts house, nothing special. It's my daily driver, so we did this all in one day so I was not picky on the rotors.

Had I had more time, I think I would of got the Gold and slotted brand people were talking about - can't remember the name....:(

Though MAF is the only place I can find 'em now

I am running an early 90's pickup mc. Bolted right up without a problem and saved somes bucks by buying it through a salvage yard.
