All right, people, let's see pics of your offroad trailers! ex-military, fabbed, high-end purpose built, please post some pics and some comments on what works and what doesn't. I'm getting ready to finish up my own offroad trailer and would appreciate some last minute thoughts!

Thnx!

I guess I'm confused since just last week he posted "If I had to do it all over again, I would do like Mike S and start from scratch. Cheaper, and you don't have to spend money correcting the M416's shortcomings."

Exiled, "getting ready to finish up" your trailer? I thought it was finished and perfect years ago! Are you building another one?

At any rate, good to see you online again. We missed you. We still miss you really alot on the 3FE list - give us another try there. Despite the occasional curmudgeonly comment ;) it's a very fun group.

Easy, guys, chill out, I was posting from work, and didn't have any pics of my M416 conversion there with me! Here's a shot of my project trailer, taken about a year ago. I am getting ready to finish up the propane tank, water tank and re-wire. and it should be good to go.

I miss the 3FE list too, I just don't have enough time to cruise it....didn't have much time for Cruiser *period*, until recently, and now I have about 30 different projects to finish up on the Cruiser besides the trailer. Maybe next year around this time it will be out and about again.

Exiled - didn't mean anything by typing that, just meant since you were asking about last minute things, it may help if we saw what you had so far ;)

Here's some information on the trailer:
1967 M416, completely disassembled, blasted and painted. Custom tailgate, custom steel lid, custom reinforced tube fenders. Frame lengthened by 24" (allowed mounting a cooler in front of tub, allows opening the rear swingouts on the Cruiser's bumper while the trailer is hooked on, and permits the trailer to jacknife 90 degrees without touching the Cruiser's body). Sprung over on stock springs with longer shackles to match the Cruiser's height, custom foot (so it sits level on new height), custom axle that matches width and bolt pattern as the Cruiser and uses 3,500 lb. capacity standard spindles, registered as a homebuilt trailer with custom plate ("TLCM416").

Since I took the above picture I added a nylon mesh cargo net to the inside of the steel lid (for tarps, jackets, etc...) and mounted a 5-gallon jerry can to each side of the trailer. I also had the interior of the trailer Scorpion-lined, it's about halfway between Rhino-lining and Line-X, not as soft as Rhino but not quite as abrasive as Line-X.

I also have, but have not installed, a 3.5 gallon propane tank and regulator, a 40 liter fresh water tank and pump, and a couple of tractor lights to illuminate the campsite.

I'm about 1/3 done with the wiring, using heavy-duty 7-pin wire and connectors.

I also have two more projects that I don't know where to start with but have some ideas. I need a table for the campsite and was hoping to integrate it somehow with the trailer. One thought I had was to attach it to the side of the trailer somehow and have it rest on one of the fenders. This would allow me to pull it off without mounting legs to it, but I just haven't sat out there with a measuring tape and made it happen.

The other project is integrating a handle into the steel lid. As it stands now, it's awkward to open (the interior lining made the fit *very snug*, you have to push it up to release the lid. Made it essentially waterproof, but now opening the lid is a two-handed operation), I really want to add some grip to it. Thought about just using the passenger side grab handle from an early FJ40 (1. because I have a couple lying around, and 2. because I already used the windshield clamps from an early FJ40 for the trailer's tailgate), but I've also considered welding something to it (since I'll paint the trailer to match the truck sometime in the next year).

Thoughts, suggestions, ideas? I know it's tough without pics, but I don't have detailed shots handy. Ill try to take it out next weekend (air out the tent while I'm at it) and snap some close-ups.

Thanks!

I would think the grab handle in the middle would work well in opening the top.

When you get the pics, one or tow of the tailgate would be good. I know this is mode many like to do to their M416 if and when they get one.

Ex, comments on the tent (size, vendor, stability, quality etc) ?
thx

So I'm scanning through this post and I see a pic of a very familiar trailer being claimed by some Clown calling himself Exiled and I'm thinking " What kinda rotten rookie jackass would come on here claiming that a trailer built by one of the most popular members of any board ever that's been off-board for a year or more is his own work". And I'm gettin all riled up inside and then I think..." Wait a minute... is it so?" Then I look at some of his other posts and sure as s*** I think it is.

WELCOME BACK YOU FAWKIN NEWBIE! :flipoff2:

We missed ya around here! Hows the Princess doin? Relegated to driveway patrol for a while? Last year I had you send a bunch of trailer pics. I'm still looking for the right trailer, but in the interem I bought a white 60 to go with the trailer once I do find one. It'll be the slightly smaller clone setup.

Welcome back again. Hope to see you around here more often.

I have 4 gas rams on my aluminum top. It just eases right up without a lot of 'push'. Ya might givr that some thought as a possible fix.

Hey, Bman! Long time no hear! Just finally getting my life in some semblance of order and trickling back to my old haunts...

The Princess is fine, a bit long in the tooth but always faithful. Not a lot of wheeling lately, but lots of plans, I've been slowly accumulating parts to do a big upgrade on the old beast, maybe even hose her down with a cheap coat of paint (different color, too).

Just recently replaced alternator, starter, coil, distribuitor, carburator, spark plugs, spark plug wires and both batteries (treated the old girl to twin Optimas), and it's like a whole new truck, best mileage she's ever gotten since she got off the boat.

Nice to see you got a white 60, where are the pics of the trailer?

Man, I miss Arizona so much it hurts, when my boy was born and we were spending some sleepless nights, I cruised a lot of AZ websites late at night, dreaming of going back...

Mike, I have two shocks on mine, but I think I need heavier duty ones...

i thought the same thing at first,,,,, hey,,,,, err,, exiled, yeah thats it.. long time brother!!!!
glad to hear your getting things back on track,, we would love to have you back in AZ.
trailers huh? i got my basic trailer done, its roadable and i have used it a few times, i kinda like it open like a pick-up bed, dont know if i will ever close it in but i do have ALOT more things to finish up on the "little mule" before its presentable. i should have a year old pic here on another trailer thread.
i will be adding fuel and water tanks underneath, as well as propane and fullsize BBQ grill, was going to hang a spare tire underneath with the factory spare winch from the pig, but it hangs too low.

P.S. we still have an OZ expedition to sort out at some point.

take care man, good to see you back.
