OK...I have rebuilt plenty an axle from a 30, 44 to a 60..even some rovers.
I have never come across a snap ring on the axle shaft this stubborn.
I just rebuilt the front end with new seals etc...and I can't for the life of me get the stupid snap rings back on. I considered just using a normal snap ring with holes...but all I have is skinnier ones.

Are there a different pair of snap ring pliers that i don;t know about that will make this thick no holes snap ring work?

Ideas?

Get a set of "transmission pliers". Should be able to find them anywhere. I've gotten them from CSK auto and places like that.

They have flat paddle tips with serated faces. Made specifically for these type of snap rings.

thats the one I used. Got at sears. Makes the job farely simple... a snap, if you will.

X4, I used those exact pliers as well....Craftsman calls them "Lock Ring Pliers"

ground needle nose pliers

I took some needle nose pliers and ground out little hooks on the outside; closed them; put them in place and then opened them...basically i made my own lock ring puller and used it as such...there aren't many sears near me

I would much rather squeeze to open the tool then spread to open them.

I have a pair/set from craftsman that can spred or compress by changing out the center spring...It is a good design and works great. It also comes with different size pins to swap out at the ends so you can do all kinds of snap ring sizes.

On some applications it is necessary to put the snap ring in a certain orientation cause' the edges of it are rounded off slightly on one side and flat on the other, (from when it was cut), check it out and someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Best of luck...

Duckbill pliers works too

i too have the same set pictured, and it was easy
