I had posted this question under another title over a month ago and didn't receive much help. So I post again with the same question. When descending a hill in low range and first gear my transmission will slip into second without the shifter moving its original position. I took it into a mechanic and was told to adjust the linkage which I did with no improvement. Took it back and was told it could possibly be my engine and tranny mounts. Now this just doesn't seem right and I do not want to spend 3 hundred on parts that I don't need. Any help or info would greatly be appreciated. Yes I also have done the search for similar problems with no luck.
That is what I had initially tried but in the Haynes manual it said to push the lever to the front of the vehicle and the mechanic said he had adjusted it. I will try this one again. Any other info?
Well I am at work and I haven't had a chance for the adjustment but my wife did stop by with the LC and I had a chance to drive it. This is what I found. When in high I shift the lever to low and it does not illuminate, by pressing upwards towards 2nd it will illuminate. While doing this I proceeded to accelerate and the transmission did not slip. I also did this in low range with and without the lockers engaged and had the same results. Now I just need a little more time and I will get under there and follow the instructions that Jon sent me. I do consider myself a 2 kind of guy but this is just givin me some trouble. I will post when I am done, hopefully with favorable results.
I got under the LC last night trying out the instructions that were given. This is what resulted.
When I place the shifter to low the light will not illuminate unless barely pushed towards 2nd. Started the adjustment procedure and still was not working. I finally got the light to illuminate and the car to stay in low/1st with out shifting. Now the shifter does not align correctly with indicators and I have to force the shifter to park before it locks and I can remove the key. Another thing when I removed the linkage completely and moved the shifter on the tranny to low the light would not illuminate. Basically I have the shift adjusted to just barely hold the tranny in low. What does this mean? Is the tranny going bad?
WELL I FINALLY GAVE UP AND TOOK IT IN A AN AUTOMATIC SHOP. THEY HAD THE LC FOR A WEEK AND SOLVED MY SLIPAGE PROBLEM. COME TO FIND OUT IT WAS THE NEUTRAL SWITCH OR MSPL SENSOR THAT KEEPS THE TRANNY IN GEAR. THAT IS WHY MY LIGHT WOULD NOT GO ON UNLESS I PUSHED UP ON THE SHIFT LEVER. ALL IN ALL IT WAS NOT A EXPENSIVE FIX(600 PARTS AND LABOR). THANKS TO YOU WHO TRIED TO HELP.
