I have a 1990 hdj81. I bought from a mud member who had put a lot of time into it, and it was turn key.
I daily drive mine and wheel it hard. The money I have put into has either been elective (steel bumper and sliders), or as a result of me abusing it (4 ft deep mud pits are hell on...
Congrats. Would love for you report back with what difference it makes.
I have s straight through muffler and a resonator and am very happy. Nice rumble but not too loud
The biggest thing this week was finally getting a 3" turbo back mandrel bent exhaust tucked inside the frame. The difference it made was remarkable.
90% of the cab vibrations went away.
Exhaust drone completely gone
Engine and exhaust sounds are quiter but sound "beefier". Its a low rumble now...
I was able to do a little more work this past week
Thankfully, I had plenty help
I installed the white knuckle rock sliders which Im VERY happy with. Easy to install with a floor jack and two jack stands. Only issue was get the sliders in the right position to slip the ubolts through. You...
Ok, after completing the 12v conversion I swapped back to the stock airbox. BIG difference! Egts went up close to 200 degrees and throttle became less responsive. I will put the new back on but need to have the outlet enlarged from 2.5" to 3".
I don't have any jis bolts locally so I ordered...
Alright, after nearly 12 days and a number of misteps, it looks like the 12v starter conversion is complete. After initial completion, it appeared to be a failed attempt, but i was able to find where i had wired something incorrectly, fixed that and it started right up and seems to be working...
Glad to hear your wife is ok.
If you don't need the 4wd, I would seriously look into the 100 series. Better ride and interior, more modern but sacrifices some strength in the 4wd, but that won't matter for you
@Delta VS Is there anything on your overhead storage shelf to prevent items from sliding out the back? Also, do you buy the brackets seperately or are they included?
I ended up going with the gorilla stand from home depot and it is great. Huge platform to standon and to place tools. Lightweight so easy to move around, compact so easy to store.
It is quite high though. I would say if you are over 5'10" or have less than a 4" lift, it may be too high unless...
10 days but I think i have the engine bay rewired for the 12v starter and I will try to start it today. I have to admit, i'm a little worried about that first start. I havent replaced the non-essential parts i've removed in case it doesn't start.
My biggest issue was finding the aux power box...
I'll finish the conversion tomorrow, but i have ran into some questions.
I've been using @FlyAddiction 's 1HDT 24v to 12v conversion step by step thread and his wiring diagram
One question I have, do i need to keep the +B junction box? It's not in the diagram, but it wasn't mentioned in the...
@mattimooseprime Did you ever have a chance to check on that plug?
I was able to work a little on the 12v conversion this week. Mostly trying to figure out where i wanted to mount the isolator and switch. I eventually went with the least creative solution I could think of.
I made a few cables...
You wouldn't still happen to have a link or part number you used for the reverse lights? My are completely useless, so want to go with a brighter, preferably led light to see if it helps
Its directly above the starter alongside two cylindrical plugs one being twice the size of the other
Absolutely, the only reason i didn't default to that assumption was a nagging feeling that i had unplugged an odd shaped plug.
Got started on the 12v starter conversion this week.
Old starter is out
and the new starter is in
I'd like to say it was easy, but the top bolt on the old starter was hard to get too. Deep in the engine bay in a narrowed space with all manner of wire in the way. Took me a while to get...
