I had no heat whatsoever. Flushed with water first and that did not fix it, then i did it again with CLR and finally got blazing heat! I just made sure to thoroughly flush the CLR out with water and I have had no issues whatsoever. ( did a final rinse with distilled water and blew it all out...
I had already replaced the wires, cap , plugs etc. I was just trying to be as economical so i could spend money on necessary and important things like tires and lift . So far my starter has worked great and i have not had any further issues. I Hope you have the same success.
Around the beginning of summer, my 97 made the noise you described and was hard to start. It would finally catch and start but it was random. I ended up pulling the starter and buying this Denso starter solenoid repair kit $22 and i havnt had any trouble since
DENSO STARTER SOLENOID REPAIR KIT...
Got my polk speakers installed front and back. Ive been without speakers for a year so its cool to hear something other than road noise lol. Today i threw on a new idler pulley. Next will be wiring up a Scion t1819 radio... should be fun.
I drive mine as a daily driver all over the place. Anything car/truck 20 years old may need some maintenance but once done these vehicles are very reliable. I baselined mine and have been enjoying it ever since.
Look at the crankshaft position sensor - there is a o-ring mod to stop the leak if you search for it.
Also check the oilsensor on the drivers side. Mine was leaking and just needed a seal.
I would stay 2din and go with a @bhicks cupholder for the console. But if your set on single din would a fold out 4runner cup holder work for that spot?

I had the same issue a few weeks ago. I took the starter out and cleaned the contacts. It worked great for a week and then got the same click... I changed out the fusible link and all has been good so far. (fusible link looked good and connections were tight)
Put a new positive battery terminal on and a new fusible link.
Also did the EGR resistor mod and switched out my front O2 sensor. Now no check engine light :)
