Voltage drop and electric fuel pump question

Depends how "old school" the 350 is and the way it was wired. Back in the carburetor days, the voltage to the coil was taken off a now never used terminal on the starter. That terminal supplied voltage to the coil. However if this engine had a points style distributer at one time, some were...

    Terrain Tamer Parabolic Springs

A leaf spring can be designed to flex well but they need to be specific. A spring for a soft top 40 without any accessories will need a different rate than a 40 with a hardtop, roof rack, bumpers, winch, aux gas tank and a tire carrier. There's a relationship between free arch, spring rate and...

    2F health questions....what to do?

no need to rush things. spin in up a few times a day, check things in between. When your comfortable, for a minute then shut it down. Check things like plugs for oil or burn, temp and oil pressures. It's just a common sense thing. Run it for longer and longer periods and recheck compression...

no clutch engagement downey sbc 76 fj

If the clutch is engaged , the clutch disc is spinning. If the disc is spinning, the transmission input shaft is spinning. It the input is spinning and you try to pop it in gear without depressing the clutch, you'll know real fast if the clutch is engaged. Visualize the mechanics of the situation

    2F health questions....what to do?

I picked up an 82 fj40 that had been stored for 15 years. It was sitting so long the water had evaporated in the block leaving nothing but a dry caked up powder in the block. I replaced the thermostat housing, radiator, hoses and flushed the block a few times. I cranked over the engine and...

    Anyone recommend a starter?

sometimes that spinning slower situation can be cured with better cables and a fresh battery. Usually #1 welding cable is good. The cable you buy from a welding shop beats the off the shelf Autozone stuff

80 Series Power Steering Box Install on FJ40 Frame

you need a custom relay rod. 21mm threads at the top, by the steering gear, 17mm at the bottom, by the wheel. I'm assuming that US spec and South American spec Cruisers are the same

Need help with front end head-scratcher

I disagree with the locking hubs being no benefit. Look at the 80 series. With drive plates the birfs and front drive shaft are spinning all the time. 80 Birfields will start clicking from wear even if you never go 4 wheeling. With locking hubs you will never wear a birfield unless you lock them...

Need help with front end head-scratcher

Need help with front end head-scratcher

The Borg warner T-case has it's own ID plate with a model number, date of mfg, etc. Dana does the same with axles and T cases ( now New Venture). I didn't try running any Toyota Vin numbers for any info. I guess I wasn't that curious. Thirty years ago , aside from John ( @ living in the past )...

Need help with front end head-scratcher

I worked on the truck and ran the ID plate. It was definitely a Toyota built combination. The t-case was factory mated to the Quadratrac. I can't recall the part number. I believe the Jeep version was a 1339 and the Toyota version was one number off. Maybe a 1340. I never looked into why Toyota...

Need help with front end head-scratcher

During the first "gas shortage" in the late 70s, Toyota got together with Borg Warner and built a Full time T-case for the 40 based on the Jeep Quadratrac T-case. It had shifters on both side of the tranny shifter. They never got into full production and DOT approval so they were sold off to...

4 Speed Flywheel vs. 3 Speed Flywheel

I think the number one reason Toyota went to a diaphragm clutch was the lower pedal pressure. In most cases a three finger can provide better clamping pressures but you can overcome that with a larger diameter diaphragm clutch. Most of my clutch swapping has been with V-8 conversions because the...

Stock 1974 FJ40 for an African roadtrip to Morocco?

Where I'm bogged down is sorting the roughly 16,000+ images I shot from 1974 to 2005. Particularly frustrating are the improperly processes negatives and transparencies that can't be truly fixed. Too long or incorrect developer temps, not sufficient wash after the fix.
