    rust prevention after sandblasting

I've used Picklex for years, particularly after beadblasting parts. It's by far the best way to convert bare metal, especially blasted metal, to a rust proofed surface ready for painting. If the parts are kept indoors, the metal coated with Picklex can be kept indefinately before needing...

FJ 40 3 speed trans question

My 71 FJ40 with OEM 29" tires will easily cruise at 70mph with the original 3 speed and F engine. I usually cruise at 65mph though on the interstate, as it's a more comfortable range for the F engine.

New 40 Series Bodies Feeler. Pics!!!!

Here's my critique. First, these parts aren't close to being OEM like Paul's in Panama. Notice the upper lip of the quarter panels. There's no provision for mounting the hardtop side panels! The running boards aren't diamond plate stamped like OEM running boards. Also the bottom rear...

    Factory Jerry Can? ? ?

The can is definately not what Toyota currently sells now - I'm not sure about old stock. The bracket, on the other hand, does look like the old Toyota bracket which was sold in the 60s. These need to be replicated.

    real steel cruiserparts

Their rear wheel well panels suck, as does the rear bed. I know of a guy restoring a 81 FJ40, and he went over there and bought quarter panels, wheel well panels, and the rear bed. The bed was not pressed right - it appears to have slipped in the dies. Also, the fuel tank sending unit opening...

    Drum wheel date stamp

They should be date stamped on the inside, near the flats next to the hole for the inner tube air nozzle.

    OEM Windshield Question

1970 vintage OEM windshield glass is no longer available from Toyota. The later model glass is still available, but it must be cut ot fit. You're better off just letting a local auto glass shop cut you a new windshield.

Need advice 1969 engined seized up

You've definately got a ruined engine thanks to an incompetant garage. I'd definately push this with them, at least to reimburse you with another used engine (they must swap it in). This very thing happened to a new cruiser owner that I personally know, except it was his fault that he didn't...

    Powdercoating!

Okie, FYI, the early 70s model radiator shrouds were actually yellow zinc coated, which quickly oxidized to a greyish color. I believe on later cruisers they were painted black. I can't remember if you're trying to do a correct restoration, or not. I've done a lot of engine sheet metal...

    64 gas tank??

The tanks for a 64 FJ40 are a discontinued item from Toyota. You should be able to get your old tank repaired, as they were originally galvanized, and usually hold up quite well.

    Factory Service Tools

Owatonna Tool Company in Minnesota sells dealer SST. They can either be ordered online, or over the phone. Your Toyota dealer can probably order them also, but you're probably better off buying direct from the manufacturer/distributor. Their website is: http://www.otctools.com/

    Covers or stock steering wheels?

SOR sells them. I bought a black leather one a couple of years ago for my 71 FJ40.

    Retro emblem "feeler"

I'd take one as long as the attachment studs were metric, not inch thread pitch.

73 FJ40 Want to add a factory rollbar?

If you intend to keep the hard top on, I wouldn't even worry about a putting in a roll bar. The hard top is more than sturdy enough to support the weight in event of roll over. I knew a guy once that slide down an Alaskan mountain after being forced off an icy road by an out of control truck...

Anyone use speed bleeders on their brake conversions?

The speedbleeders take a 3/8" wrench size. I've got them installed on all my cruisers, and I like the simplicity of bleeding. Well worth the expense in my opinion. I believe the original OEM bleeders take a 10mm wrench.

    windshield weatherstripping

Locking key strips aren't used on later model FJ40s. The weatherstrip is "one piece".

    windshield weatherstripping

The locking key can usually be reused, in my experience. To make the window easier to install on versions that take the lock piece, install the window without the locking piece, then use the special tool that's sold by Equalizer (Auto Glass tool manufacturer) to thread the locking piece in...

    Who has the best weatherstrippin

No question about it, Toyota is the best. As Wadesters suggest, get with a Toyota dealer that will give you a 25% discount. American Toyota in Albuquerque- talk to Dan in parts - can probably set you up. I've got a set of new CCOT front door weatherstrips that I can let go for cheap.

Where to get a clutch for a '70

Agree with Nailbender. Go with a Toyota "remanufactured" 3 finger pressure plate. Check around on the clutch disks - You can probably get a cheaper OEM equivalent at the local parts store. Don't forget to change out the throw out bearing, and pilot bearing, and might as well plan on replacing...

    Old school points

What's the part number of the distributor? Chances are you may need to call someone like Jim Chenowith to figure out what you need.
