Just curious, If you are welding something similar to the photos onto the front axle, do you need to worry about heat generated? Do you need to remove the 3rd member to make sure no damage is done, or is that unnecessary?:meh:
Toynut,
Some things to consider are if you bought a stock cruiser would you want to do all the stuff that the "frankencruiser" has? I bought my 3rd 40 back in 1991 for $5k and it was in Oregon and didn't have any rust. 17 years later the body is in really good shape, but I mainly wheel in it...
My fj is a 79 and the drivetrain is all stock escept for the motor. There is a grinding sound coming from the t-case when it is in 4 hi or low. The hubs are not locked and in 2wd the noise is gone. When it comes to gearboxes I am really good at changing the oil and that is about it. Can...
Matt,
Have you considered installing a pre-luber type system on the motor to build up the oil pressure each time you start the motor? When I built my SB350 many years ago I installed a preluber that tied into the ignition and when I turned the key to accessory it would build up the oil...
I just put a 4" lift on this summer (not HFS but Safari) and the ride was pretty rough for the first week. I had to put my tool box, spare parts, and fluids in the back to add some weight. It helped a lot, but I run it topless also. The weight of the hard top may do the trick. Just give it a...
So it is a reassignment of priorities again. I guess the most logical progressions would be Bobby longs, lockers with new pinions front and rear, and then whatever direction I choose to go with t-case gearing. Unless of course I break something else and need to rework it. I fully believe in...
So Venpick,
I understand what you are saying. Going to 4.88's will take a huge strain off of the drivetrain, axles, and help out in the engine performance dept. as well. I agree that I don't want to be pulling apart diffs every summer, but to do it right I would have to have both r&p sets as...
I have a 79 FJ40 w/ 4" SUA and SBC 350. After doing some research here in the tech area I found out that my stock axles have 3.83 gears in the pumpkins. I always thought the 40's came with 4.11's. I am planning on putting 35's on this summer and my next upgrade will be a rear locker ( at...
I have also mounted mine on the left side of the glove box. I had plenty of wire to run across to the gauge cluster, but mainly I put it there because if I ever get water into the cruiser it is one of the hightst points to mount it, unlike down by the stock location. I will admit it is a...
I need some advice from all of you who have already started upgrading your drivetrain components. I just finsihed added saginaw power steering, shackle reversal, and 4" lift. I have a SB 350 and all the rest is stock Toyota. I want to bump up to 35' tires next, but after that I don't know how...
This is something you need to consider: How much are you willing to spend to get something that is good qualilty that will last a long time. I chose the Painless 12 circuit kit for my 79. Some people say they suck and they couldn'
t get any help with their problems. I had no major issues...
I rewired my 79 with a painless kit about 3 years ago. I had no problems with the kit itself, and the issues I had the customer service guys at painless helped me fix within about 10 minutes each time I called. If you have the money and want to have the knowledge of how your cruiser is wired...
What type of intake manifold are you using? Your best bet is to just use 1/2" or 3/4" heater hose and run it from the firewall to the waterpump and have another hose come off the mainfold and return into the firewall. No specific molded pieces.

I took it to an alignment shop on wednesday and everything printed out showing what the factory numbers were after the alignment was done. I am not too concerned as I don't need it to self center since I don't take my hands off the steering wheel every time I turn it. I guess I'll play around...
