Haven't updated this in a bit....not a whole lot going on with the green 40. I keep threatening to get it on the schedule but for now she gets dusted off and admired daily :)
I did get some new tires on it after much debate. This was a tough one.....I went back and forth, back and forth...
Hey Curt....
Thanks so much for all that info. Great stuff. I can only imagine that there were some really cool people out there back then enjoying their trucks, the land and being with their buddies. Fun stuff.
Every time I walk by the truck(about 150x a day since it's right outside my...
The black will be really useful for dash stuff, door stuff...anywhere you don't want gold or bright silver. It's a cool option.
So I keep my solutions in food grade buckets with really good lids....3.5 gallon buckets(I bought 4 new buckets with o-ring sealed spin on lids to use now....I want...
We ran some black chromate the other day and it turned out really well. I probably did these a little too long....they were very black. I was thinking they were going to be more of a black chrome.....next test I do I will do them for 10 seconds or something(these were dipped for about 30)...
We just finished up a batch.....well, partial batch.....this was a good one. I haven't used my plating chemicals since summer.....storage didn't hurt them. A little cooler than summer for us and my heater for the zinc bath took a dump so we heated the buckets in the ultrasonic cleaner for a...
I think you'll be fine with the Caswell setup....it really works. It's like magic when it does :)
Our steps:
+Degrease parts very very well. We use an ultrasonic cleaner with Pinesol. We put the hardware in plastic containers in Pinesol then submerge that in cleaner(water is in the tank)...
We use copper wire....I think it's for jewelry or something....24awg. Amazon.
When something comes out that I don't like, it goes back in line to be cleaned, blasted, brushed, acetone bath, back in the plating chemicals.
My chromates are at 76-78....no heat.
My biggest failure was when the...
Pretty difficult trails or just rock strewn slow going trails?
Any idea if those trails still exist out there? Wonder if they are still in closed areas?
I'm guessing it morphed from a Jeep club into a 4WD club. The article is from 1961 so not a ton of Toyotas around back then...probably all Jeeps. Must have been miserable :) The article mentions "Japanese Toyota vehicle that resembles a Jeep".
This was from Motortrend:
One of the country’s...
One of the most interesting and appealing things on this truck, for me, were these event plaques that were on the dash. They really hooked me hard. So cool. Must be some kind of connection as I grew up so close to Indio at the time this truck was there.
I bet this was a pretty fun event with...
You guys must have had so many 40s come thru the doors in those days. So cool and such cool backstory/history. Thanks so much for adding to this thread.
Hopefully when I get to posting pics of the suspension stuff you can see if there are any Downey parts on it. I suspect the header and...
I was pretty surprised at how good things worked right from the start. I was reading about horror stories with trying to get things right and all the issues people had. We really didn't have many. A few isolated things but nothing too major. It's super important not to touch the pieces with...
They sell the blue chromate at Caswell.....along with the olive green and the black. They recommend 2 bottles of the blue(fewer ounces in the blue vs. the yellow....you need 2 of them to have more fluid in the bucket).
We do not do any polishing after plating....they simply go from the zinc bath to a fresh water rinse then into chromate.
The key from what I've read and what we do is you have to use zinc brightener....which came with the Caswell kit. I put in 1/2 to 1 teaspoon before we run parts. I have...
We use the Caswell Copy Cad kit....1.5 gallon setup. I bought it a few months ago and have run thru quite a bit of hardware. I bought the power supply on Amazon as well as a agitation pump and aquarium heater. It's easy and actually pretty enjoyable process to do but the key is in...
