    Olga - 1971 FJ40

I got the head pulled yesterday thanks to the help of my favorite mechanic. It is easy to see where the head gasket failed between cylinders 2 and 3. I will check the flatness of the block and evaluate the cylinder walls later in the week. I am still trying to determine why cylinder 6 had such...

    Olga - 1971 FJ40

Took off the bib then I pulled out the radiator, fan shroud and radiator housing along with the battery box. I plan to paint the shroud and housing before I put it back on the truck and get a new battery tray. My tray is for a dual battery set up but I only run one. Getting a little bit closer...

    Olga - 1971 FJ40

After two years of ownership it is time to dig in and give Olga a refresh. A couple weeks ago she started to run poorly and missing at idle. After checking all the basics timing, fuel and spark to no avail I did a compression check and found two of the cylinders are dead. My plan is to take the...

Builds Salt wagon My first fj40 (build)

That is good to know, I will have to add this to my to do list. Looking at my valve cover someone took an old one and added the filler cap to the back of it. Why they put the cap on the back and not the front beats me.

the 1F engines fill their oil from the side of the block that goes directly into the oil pan. They do not have a cap on the valve cover you take off to add oil through the top. There might be a transition year kind of thing where Toyota made a 1F valve cover with a cap on it but I am not aware...

What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?

My fuel tank started rusting out and clogging up my fuel filter and jets in the carburetor. My son helped me pull the tank, do some cleaning and install new fuel lines in preparation for the new tank.

Have you looked at the VIN plate? It should give you a date and what engine was originally in the truck.

Builds Salt wagon My first fj40 (build)

My biggest question with the new land cruiser is how easy is it to service and do routine maintenance on and will it have the reliability and simplicity we have all known to love about our old rigs. I know you can not compare a FJ40 to any modern vehicle but I wrench on every car I own and don't...

For my mustang I run a 1966 vintage tag on the outside and just keep my registered tag and registration in the trunk of the car. A cop has never stopped me or asked to see my plates before. I believe as long as you keep your registered tag somewhere in the vehicle you will be fine.

    I like your jeep

I'm used to the Jeep comments at this point. The couple times that I've been thrown off and left scratching my head is when someone thinks its an old 4Runner. At least they got the Toyota part right.

To Drive or Not to Drive: That is the Question...

I hope you got to explore Boone and the surrounding area a little bit before you got back on the road. There are some great hikes in that part of the world. Also the blue ridge parkway is a fun drive with some scenic overlooks.

    '71 40 Refresh - First rodeo.

I don't know why but those Porsche pasha seats really look good in a 40. You could take your 40 to a PCA event and really make some Porsche purist scratch their heads. You are doing some great work, I am enjoying watching your build.
