Mine came with a 350 and auto and I hated it. I currently have a 1KZ-TE in my FJ40 (3.0L I4 out of a JDM Surf). If I were to do it over again I would probably go with a VW of some sort. The 4 cylinders have been put in a few 40's already. I daydream of using one of the 3.0 V6 TDI's out of a...
If I were doing another Diesel swap I'd do a VW TDI of some sort. I've been eyeing the 3.0 V6 out of a Toureg. Several folks on here have done the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI's (I4) in their 40's. Look at fjdiesel's build or Godfather90's build for starters. I'm happy with my 1KZ-TE but I have the ability...
Advancing the timing from stock will usually net you some power. You don't have a "Stock" setting to go by I wouldn't think with a whole different pump on it. I would throw it on a Dyno and slowly advance the injection timing and see if you make more or less power. It could already be at the...
So I took some pics last night: https://picasaweb.google.com/toddmcclendon/FJDownpipe?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCOif56vQ09mnoQE&feat=directlink
Its a good thing I did as the driveshaft is rubbing when the suspension compresses on the passenger side. I figured it would get close but not quite...
I initially ran it straight down where the front driveshaft would need to be, 2wd only just so I could drive it. Once I got the front driveshaft built I re-routed it really tight to the transmission, then ducked it underneath the tranny to the drivers side. If I remember correctly I put the slip...
That does sound better than mine. I can't see out of my mirrors at a slow idle. The E pump is supposed to measure the time between injection events and adjust fueling accordingly to limit the shakes at idle. I don't think it works very well. I have been thinking about using fluid dampened...
Nice Job!
How much vibration do you get at idle? Mine shakes pretty badly unless I have the idle turned up a bit. I'm still on the Electronic pump.

If you don't have codes then I think you are most likely looking at a mechanical problem with the spill valve or the plunger mechanism. The ECU would throw a code if it was failing to get data from the TDC or the speed sensor.
Did you try manually powering up the spill valve? If you try it...
Place a Jumper between TE1 and E1 in the engine check connector and see if there are any codes.
If the spill valve is bad or not energizing, the pump will not build enough pressure to inject fuel. You could try to jumper power to the spill valve TEMPORARILY to see if that gets you some fuel. If...
Nope. You have losses transferring from hot charge air to water, then more losses transferring from the hot water to the air across the radiator. It's really a air/water/air intercooler. A nice large front mount air/air is your best bet for a diesel. Water to air to water is ok if you can't...
Dougal: Thanks for posting about WinOLS! I've never heard of it but it does make finding maps MUCH easier! I have a 1KZ-TE ECU from Japan on the way that is supposed to have a tuned Rom board installed. Good luck with your project. It seems you have most of the hard stuff figured out.

I tested the S-REL pin with the Glow Plug relay in place, truck and ECU fully functional. I got 11.8VDC on the output for 17.5 seconds according to the logic analyzer. The multimeter also showed 0.0VDC right when I heard the GP relay click off. Voltages measured with a Fluke. Negative on ground...
I don't think the multimeter matters too much. But I don't really know. I'm sure they are designed to be as transparent to the circuit you are testing as possible.
Ill test mine tomorrow. I have the ECU out and open so I can clip onto the S-REL pin internally without jacking up the sealed...
Could you try the test on the control wire again, but with the relay plugged in? I suspect the voltage was decaying slowly because the multimeter was not discharging the circuit very quickly or at all after the transistor in the ECU switched off. I don't think the ECU would try to modulate the...
I saw the voltage actually rise on the glow plugs, from 10.4 to 10.6 over a few seconds. I'm not sure why the ECU output voltage would drop, unless the battery voltage was dropping? I did my tests with the engine off and saw Batt. voltage go from 12.57 to 12.00. I have both Batteries. That...
