One has the tensioner on it and less cable... so look at the cable size/length.
I can't remember what the 3rd is.
If you are going to go synthetic (you should), don't get the one with the tensioner.
You can just remove it I believe.
I have it on mine, and I haven't bothered to try and take it off because I have to pull my bumper to do so and I haven't been in the mood to do that yet...
All it really does is limit the amount of line you can spool on the winch.
I put a synthetic line on mine. If I remember it didn't attach directly to the drum, but I just used duct tape for the initial hold, wrapped it horizontally across the drum then started feeding it properly.
The new HFs come with a choice of a line tensioner - don't buy that one if you want a...
Here, read this thread - I went from confused to figuring out, and I put up a lot of pics of what I did. Hope it helps!

I'm not following here.
Let me make sure we're on the same page...
Model 68142 ("Old" version of the 12k HF winch) specs for the line:
Ø0.375″ X 100′ (Ø9.5mm X 30.5m), Nominal strength=14,400 lb, 7X19 Galvanized Steel, Aircraft Wire Rope
Model 61256 ("New" version of the 12k HF winch with...
The 12k went from 100' of 3/8 to 65' of 3/8.
But yes, I just got the 12k to replace my beat-to-crap 9k, and plan on putting synthetic line on it anyway.
Odd... the 9K (if that's what you mean by the $299 version) does have an automatic load-handle brake. It has 65' of 3/8 steel on the drum.
The 12k version (normally $399 on "sale") with the new also has 65' of 3/8 steel cable on the drum.
The previous version of the 9k had 5/16", but 100' of...
I've been using the 9K - not a lot, but a few times - and haven't had any issue with it. Pulled a few 80's and a 60 and an FJ out of various situations. No complaints.
I found that an adequate application of small woodland creatures to the end of the line keeps the hook from going too far away, drastically reducing the chances of it scratching your truck....
I should clarify that. In my build thread I talk about my winch, but you have to follow the link in that comment to the other thread that actually explains the clock process.
I ordered my 9000# online. Showed up in about the same condition as the boxes on the store shelves.
But you're right, they're not packed all THAT well.
For those curious, I installed the HF 9K using their channel mount plate and cutting out the bumper on my 80.

I've pulled a few things out of the mud so far without incident... all of them on the...
