Thinking about installing locking rear differential

Got the winch…my bigger concerns are…. I do go solo 95% of the time , nothing really dramatic and I’m also at an age where things happen. Having been stuck before and getting free was a great feeling. I was 23 back then…..I know these days it would be that much greater feeling and a greater...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

@numby ok ok… you’ve stirred the pot. Did not sleep at all last night thinking of the edit you made to your post.. and my 30 year old brain started in with me. It told my 71 year old body that it doesn’t need to do the job of R&R….bring it somewhere and have a shop do it. This debate stayed...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

I am thankful for your update on this…..if I were to do this, it appears the ARB is the way to go. I have been in this “ mashed potato “ type snow many times. Chains help but are a pita to put on. When I lived in Vermont we used to head out to many roads that were closed from October to May...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

Studded tires are a seasonal acceptance…it’s just that I have great tires for mud snd snow, not that great on a highway and I don’t want to be switching …it wears me out at my age… having the right differentials may have made the difference for my need

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this as well as so many others. Thanks for taking the time to post it. My primary need will be snow…so far we’ve got nothing. My Chevy pickup may be the best option 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

I can only add my experiences living in northern Vermont and traveling in monster storms for 396 miles to rescue my in-laws…..especially that the 6 other brothers and sisters living within 15 miles were too pre-occupied to take an interest. 🤬 Ice is just one of those special entities where...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

I consider all of this great information an excellent source for guidance . I may be wrong BUT…from all of your experiences and descriptions I am currently thinking Harrop/Eaton. however, I am reading several install manuals and re-reading the comments you all have posted a few more times...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

My attempt is to also minimize the hunt for parts and pieces that may be difficult to obtain and simply open the box, take apart the differential and install the new one. i decided to add FJ60 front disc brakes. It took me a day to find them and 2 weeks to clean them up and start the caliper...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

Wow! Overnight and it seems you ALL have answered my question….and I thank you for it. Now that I have a bit more exposure to this, I have a bit more reading to do. when I was an active four wheeler in the mud and snows of Vermont, I never had issues getting stuck some where and in fact...

Thinking about installing locking rear differential

I am thinking about adding a locking diff to the rear of my FJ40. This is an area I am not well versed in….Read several pages of threads about the Air Lockers and Aussie Lockers. I am looking for a little guidance from this viewpoint. I don’t use the FJ40 as a daily driver but occasionally...
