There are tricks to getting these rigs to perform better on hills and mountains. They run very well at high RPMs and can do so for extended lengths of time. I put the power button on and then downshift until the RPMs are very high. I keep the tach out of the red but will climb an entire...
Those old power wagons were awesome. Very capable! I also appreciated the Military M37 Dodge 3/4 ton trucks. Best off-roader back in those days. I probably wouldn't own an 80-series today if I hadn't learned to wheel in an M37!
We have very steep, caliche (slippery type of dirt that comes from lime stone) hills in the Texas Hill Country. Trying to climb one of these super steep hills without lockers is an excellent way to roll your truck. I watched a guy climb one of these hills in front of me with a brand new...
If you have never driven a vehicle with lockers, you are in for a treat. It is truely amazing how easy it makes wheeling! I drove my 80 from 97 to 2010 without lockers. While I got very good at wheeling without lockers, I had to dig out several times. The last time took me over 3 hours to...
Thanks for the quick reply! How much of a hassle was it to get set up on this type of policy with State Farm? Some on mud have said they are a major hassle.
I recently re-insured my 80 because of all the "investments" I have made. I added it up before I called the insurance company and I have $35K of modifications / after-market equipment already. I recently recieved my LSeat seat covers and will probably dynamat the whole vehicle when I am...
I previously posted up an arm rest I had installed. It didn't work out. The armrest broke off at the base when I leaned to heavily on it to get something out of the passenger seat. Here is my new new set up:

I really like the look of that Delta bumper. If it had been around in 2010 when I finally put an aftermarket bumper on my rig, I probably would have picked a Delta. The ARB was pretty much it unless you were going to fab your own tube bumper. The 80 is a pretty old rig even to those of us...
In areas that are very heavily populated with deer, an ARB could be the difference between hair-marks on your bumper vs. a very expensive repair job. Keep in mind the ARB was origninally build in Australia for Kangaroos.
Lockers are the most effective of the mods you can make for wheeling your rig. I drove mine stock from 97 to 2010 (13 years). I got very good at wheeling without lockers during that time. I added lockers in 2010 and I have never used my winch to get myself unstuck since then. They are almost...
Just turned mine over 300K in December. Headgasket done at 220K. I have owned it since it had 20K on it so I have put over 280K on it myself. Plan to keep it for a long time to come. I turned it over 300K while deer hunting which is what prompted me to start modifying it years ago. I got tired...
