80 In The Snow - open vs viscous coupling center

Interesting, I wonder why this is. You’d think the 100 might be better with ATRAC and VSC. Although I don’t think the 98-99s had those features. I have heard the early ATRAC systems could freak out in snow and possibly even overload the front R&P, so maybe that was a factor on the 2000 you...

80 In The Snow - open vs viscous coupling center

From what I’ve seen I’d tend to disagree. I’d say that if an 80 series and a 60 series were exposed to the same conditions, the 80 will fare better. The older LCs had terrible sheet metal that was known to rust even back when they were new. Also my 98 Tacoma was from Maryland (not a huge salt...

80 In The Snow - open vs viscous coupling center

I thought the 80 series was actually pretty resistant to rust, especially compared to the 60 series and earlier Pickups and Tacomas. The frame and sheet metal seems a lot thicker and higher quality than other models of the same vintage.

80 In The Snow - open vs viscous coupling center

Yea idk what it is but you can tell these things were designed to get people through just about anything, out of anything, when their life depends on it, moreso than just about any other civilian passenger vehicle.

80 In The Snow - open vs viscous coupling center

Is ATRAC really better than old-school 4WD with lockers in your experience? I have my doubts but haven't seen enough to know either way.

80 In The Snow - open vs viscous coupling center

Yea I wouldn't overthink it. With the viscous coupler and AWD the 80 series is kind of like an overgrown Subaru on steroids. I'm not sure an LSD or lockers would help much in the snow; I've heard open diffs were usually better in his application, but that might be just at high speeds or when...
