I know the rear axle in my 2010 is a D60; you're probably right about the IFS though. I assumed they'd have similar strength gear up front. The first gen Tacos are D60s as well from what I understand, but I could be wrong.

Depends on if its 1st or 2nd Gen Tacoma and what you want to do with it. My 2nd Gen is almost exactly the same size as my father's 1st Gen Tundra. Both are Access Cabs but mine is a few inches shorter.

When I got my truck, it -had- to be 2005 or newer (terms of loan from parents), so I picked the best Toyota for me that I could, so the 2.7L vs 4.0L was what I was faced with :)

I'm glad to hear your 4.0 has held up so well; to be honest I also didn't quite trust it, since its only been around for six years [as far as I know].
My 22R was enough power for me even with a bed full of heavy stuff, I just drive slower. My 2.7 is as close to a diesel...
Has plenty of power for me. I'm not in a hurry on the freeway [or anywhere else], plus I'm a wilderness minimalist :)
It has a better power/weight ratio than my old 86 pickup with it's 22R, gets me 21mpg in town (25/26mpg on the highway), has been used for 15 years and is based on the 22R...
