Ok, actual final update. Got to test out the lockers while going through some muddy washes on the way to peep at wildflowers out in anza borrego. Was nice just to be able to lock everything up and cruise through the mud on street tires with out drama and without tearing up the trail further.
Ok, final update on the saga.
Looks like the "findings" were a non issue, think the local shop was just trying to be thorough to CYA. I appreciate their diligence, but it probably made me more paranoid than usual.
ECGS was a good joint to deal with. I would go back through them in the future...
Unfortunately it was way too annoying for me, so I went back to 391s. I'm happy now that I'm back with stock gears, although I do miss the pick up and reduced low range speed with the 456s.
I made a composite picture that shows the difference between 456 gears (light grey line), and my newly reinstalled OEM gears (blue line). The random harmonics are circled in red.
Still waiting to get things resolved with ECGS, so I'll share more soon.
Gear shop has had some....."interesting" findings. Going to talk with ECGS today to see if they can make it right, but I'm a little disturbed at what I have heard so far.
I hear you, but I can also heat my gears whining ;). My theory is that if three very reputable gear shops, say that the type of whining I have is pretty common on regears then I’m inclined to believe them. Like I said, it is extremely faint, and if my ears weren’t sensitive to it, I would...
My plot is probably around 40 mph, which is likely the reason for the difference :D in SPL, though I have heard that the 470s are a bit quieter than the 460s.
Totally stock, my GX averaged about 67db @ 80 mph on the freeway. After donating the horrid bridgestone tires it is now about 69 dB. Not...
Shot of the harmonic noise on coast. Like I said… it’s pretty mild, but there is definitely a harmonic in place. Also iPhone microphone is hot garbage , so it’s a noisy plot.
ECGS is just the company that did the diffs. The gears themselves are Nitro. 35 years on a flight line could do wonders for your ears ;P. Heard a F-22 take off once and it was so loud it sounded like the sound was coming from inside my head :D.
The lockers themselves are DEAD quiet. I literally cant tell when they switch on, except the light on my switch pros goes on and obviously you feel them once you turn. It also seems damn near instantaneous. I was being a dumbass and switching them on and off while turning slightly and I could...
My understanding is that the main difference is the manufacturing method and the effect it has on the mesh between the pinion and ring. Basically all OEM gears are manufactured using the 2 cut process. I only mention revolution because they do make 2 cut gears for a handful of applications
I had two different reputable shops check it out and take it for test drives. Both indicated that if they had done the gears they would’ve considered it well within normal limits.
Have about 1500 miles on them now and decided to re-regear back to OEM :O, but will still be keeping the lockers (duh).
I loved the additional pick up, but could not stand the whine from the gears even though it was very faint. Neither my wife, nor nanny could hear the whine.
Additionally, as...
Went 456s too. Decided to go to E locker route because in my heart of hearts I’m more of a mechatronics person than a true mechanical engineer ;). I convinced myself that I probably could live with the trade off of a tiny bit of instantaneous locking capability vs the generally simpler e locker...
Geara and lockers arrived today from ecgs!
What are folks running gear oil wise? I was planning on using AMSOIL svg 75-90, but saw that they have a disclaimer attached saying not to use synthetic oil in their assemblies. Thoughts?
Also appreciate their note not to forget the stub shafts :)
