My brother got one of the "Silly boys, Jeeps are for girls" stickers to put on his HDJ81. It really confuses people when his wife drives the LandCruiser though!
That clears up a point of confusion I've had for a while, having seen photos of FZJ7x's transfer cases I always thought they looked like 80-series cases but wasn't sure.
Agreed. My 1.9L TDI engine puts out more hp and torque than a stock 1HZ and gets better fuel economy, but doesn't have the same "duty cycle". Seeing @Kroll 's posts about towing a BJ42 across BC with his 79 is a great illustration of this point: my Prado could easily keep up with his 79 when...
I regularly (a couple times per year) pressure wash my engine with a steam pressure washer. I have never had trouble with the engine electrics afterwards, but I try not to hit things like electrical connectors directly. Engine degreaser works well in conjunction with a pressure washer to break...
Pictures or it doesn’t count! 😉 What you need to tackle first depends on what kind of shape it is in. I would do a thorough mechanical inspection first and see what is looking worn. If you have no record of a timing belt replacement I would look at doing that first: timing belt, idler, tensioner...
I was able to get fuel run to the Webasto and the electrical system jury rugged enough to get it to run last night. Should be good enough for the next couple of days while I wait for the rest of the materials I need to do a proper install. I did not have time to test it out last night since...
Finally got it running after several attempts with rests for recharging. Sounds like I will be able to pull into my landlord’s shop this evening to get the Webasto hooked up, so at least I will have a place above freezing to work on it.
The polar vortex has outrun the postal service; I am just a couple of components short of being able to finish my Webasto install and it is -22°F here. Extension cords and battery chargers have been deployed, but no life has been coaxed out of the Prado yet.
Supposedly one of the main lobbyists for putting the 25-year rule in place was Mercedes-Benz USA. In the early-mid 80's grey market Euro spec MB's were very popular in the US due to the higher power output (less restrictive emissions) and better appearance (no 5mph crash bumpers). MBUSA wasn't...
There is a hole in the metal dash with a rubber grommet that the wires can pass through. I used a hot nail to melt a couple of new holes for the extra wiring to pass through.
Installed a new faceplate for the clinometer binnacle on the dash. The decal was drawn up by @SnowVersion who was able to match the original font and colors used for the altimeter and thermometer and have it printed on a vinyl sticker. Looks great with the Auber gauge and matches the rest of the...
Christmas has arrived early! After spending more than two weeks in a Bulgarian postal sorting warehouse my Webasto Thermo Top C finally made its way to Montana.
Does the speedometer cable run up the outside of the firewall on pre 1990 models? On my ‘91 it enters the cabin on top of the transmission tunnel and runs up the inside of the firewall behind the dash.
If the BJ73 speedometer cable is anything like the LJ78 one, there should be a single tab on the side of the connector that you squeeze to release it from the back on the instrument cluster. There are a couple of photos in this thread that might help: 70 series dash removal -...
There's a group from Bozeman heading that way tomorrow, I'm sure they'd be happy to meet up with you there. Unfortunately I can't go so I figured I'd check it out today since I was driving past.
It's the Boulder Tunnel, a RR tunnel completed in 1893 located just outside the ghost town of Wickes, MT. The tunnel is 6145ft long and straight as an arrow, standing at one end you can see a tiny pinhole of light that is the other end. Originally built to service the silver smelter in Wickes.
