   Are the 80's too old

   I'd assume the remoteness of places in Australia. There's quite a few areas that dont have gas/petrol stations for a long ways.

   I'd get the 105. You're already thinking of buying a vehicle to engine swap and you want to use it with kids which I'm sure your free time is somewhat limited. Working on vehicles suck, enjoy the time spent adventuring with your kids.
