no the tranny itself is fine (i think), but the rear main seal is bad and the t-case needs to be rebuilt; hence pulling the auto-box and the t-case.
Of paying someone to do this...
Hey guys, it's becoming obvious to me that I need to address the transmission/T-case issues with my rig.
So here's my very specific question - who wants to help me? While it's something I most likely could tackle myself, I'd feel a whole lot better if someone who knew what they were doing...
Also, the t-case is a split case design which means that it can't be removed from the transmission separately. This is also why I'm looking at pulling the entire unit - then I can rebuild the t-case and fix whatever I need to in the truck.
From what I've seen (and I have the FSM which is a great help), you can remove the tranny from the truck from underneath. The biggest and most obvious bits are the driveshafts, cross member, and all of the fittings, and about a gazillion screws.
In answer to the leaking question, it looks like...
I have an 88 FJ62 with 155K and I have the following issues:
1) A pretty significant leak from the bell housing to the transmission
2) Leaking T-case
3) The dreaded whomp-whomp-whomp under decel
So I think it's time for a t-case rebuild and pulling the transmission, however what I'm...
Actually no, I want to keep Bruce, but I need a workable plan as to how to tackle the vehicle. He'll never be a beauty queen, and that's ok. However I would like him to present nicer than he does.
Of course my fantasies for Bruce revolve around either a 'Yota diesel or a 2FE with the H55...
While I am low on funds for fun stuff like a lift or gears or fancy stuff like that, I've decided that I really need to address the T-Case/Leaking Rear seal issue on Bruce.
Now on to my questions:
Well first let me backtrack - I think that removing the tranny might be beyond my technical...
I think looking at the whole package that (A) is the way to go - it gives you decent figures on both ends making it a reasonably capable vehicle that is livable.
PJ I took Bruce out for a longish drive yesterday and the brakes are still softer than I'd like but they seem to work fine - I wouldn't mind help bleeding them again though to at least try getting them where I'd like them.
Let me know when's good for you.
No fortunately if they don't leak from the fittings and they actually fit, then the calipers have been fine.
It is frustrating though to go through so many when you're trying to get your rig back on the road.
