Thanks everybody for your input. It's interesting to see a fairly even split with opinions on how the bias ply handles. I think this could be a very subjective matter and there might be variables with how everybody's rigs are setup as well.

My front shackles are...
Alright, I have a question for anybody that has has bias ply Swampers and drives a lot on the street. Is it just the nature of these tires to want to grab and pull into every little minute crack and rut in the road?
I have 33x12.50x15 TSL's on my FJ40 and it's still darty and handles like s***...
This is old news, but I was searching in regards to the same question this guy, as well as another person had, and came up with no good results. Therefore I am posting this link for future searchers. 73-78 fuel line routing.
Has anybody tried out one of these tie rods from Autozone? AutoZone.com | | Tie Rod Adjusting Sleeve | TIE ROD ADJ SLEEVE. I'm wondering if it's decent or a total piece of s***, if anybody has had any experience with it.
I would buy that gray 78 in a heartbeat over the 63. If you can't afford that it might not be a good idea to be looking for a 40 IMO. I personally do not like 67 and older cruisers. I ended up buying a somewhat rusted out 79 to use as a donor vehicle for the axles, transmission, windshield...
I just came across this as well while doing my nightly CL search. I would buy the s*** out of that thing if it had the removable hard top! What a tease. It's a good price none-the-less.
I have been through this same scenario as well. If you plan on staying spring under (if you still are) I would go with option 2, since wider axles probably aren't really needed. As far as cost I would also factor in a master cylinder from a FJ80 with the 1" bore to help with the with the fluid...
I bought an Energy Suspension brand kit a few weeks ago from these guys for 83 bucks, since Summit was on backorder at that time. Energy Suspension Parts: LandCruiser - FJ, 1975
I like to buy my parts through LC oriented businesses, but when they're all charging $160-$180 for what looks to be...
What year is your 40? I would have to advise getting a FJ80 master cylinder right off the bat. It will prevent a lot of headaches if you switch to rear disk brakes. If you already have a booster, the FJ80 MC will bolt right on, the 4 bolt pattern is the same.
Judging by the photo Toyota must have put the loops on to make it easy to to hook a bungee cord to the bottom of the quarter panel to keep it from falling off! I'm so glad that our roads don't get salt here in Origone.
X2. My 3 spd case always was popping out of low when decelerating down hill. The shift fork was severely worn out where it rode in the dog clutch. Worked great with a new fork.
I had the same raunchy clothes fouling raw fuel smell emitting from my 350 for a couple of years. I just finally got it fixed. I have a quadrajet, rams horn manifolds, flowmasters that exit right in front of the rear tires, and a standard HEI distributor.
The first thing I tried was messing...
Dave, are you running a 2F? I have 3.70's with 33's and a 350. I have no complaints until I get on to steeper slower speed hills on fire roads and then I have to lug the motor way down or drop down a gear and let it scream. I used to have 4.11's and didn't notice a huge difference IMO going to...
If you get a 68-73 3rd member the flanges will match your driveshafts. A 74 and later 3rd will have a larger flange that uses 10mm bolts instead of the earlier 8mm like your 67 has. The bolt size is the easiest thing I can think of that is a dead give away. AFAIK you could use your 67 flange on...
I DD my 67 when it lets me...that is when it isn't suffering from it's flavor of the month temporary ailment shenanigans that it likes to pull. I also have bias ply TSL's on it, not complaining but I think we all know how those are. I also have to drive through "the gauntlet" as I have dubbed...
IMO for a DD, ditch the 350 and find a 283 to stuff in there. I daily drove my 40 with a 283 in it for about 6 years. Now that I look back it was great. It got about 13-14 MPG and it was a tired motor. I also have a heavy right foot. It also provided a good balance of power for performance, and...
You can use any 3rd member up to the Fj62 series, but you'll have to use 67 or older differential side gears to match your 10 spline 67 axle shafts. All 68+ diff side gears have 30 splines.
67 and older axle assemblies are a weird animal all in themselves, mainly the front. My friendly advice...
And as far as the transfer case goes I would rebuild it ASAP or at a very minimum replace the idler shaft and idler needle bearings. Along with losing the teeth on the 3 speed transmission I have also destroyed one 3 speed transfer case as well as two 4 speed transfer cases, all in my 67, behind...
