Speedometer issue - 1HZ with auto gearbox

I took apart the dashboard and inspected the cluster. My speedo is electronic. All other gauges (temp, oil, fuel and charge) work properly expect the speedo jumps to 60km/h immediately after the car starts moving and remains there until full stop. The RPM is also not correct, the needle moves up...

    Dash light LEDs

Wow! Almost too bright. Are they T5 or T10 size LED bulbs?

    Dash light LEDs

Which size LED bulbs did you guys use? There are 3 larger and about 20 small bulbs in my HZJ76 instrument cluster. I only want to upgrade the overall dash brightness and don't really care about the indicators.

    70 series cowl/dash differences?

They seem to be the same. I just swapped the dash in my 2002 HZJ76 back to original as the PO put an older model Prado dash cover. The dash support frame is very simple.

H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

I was able to find a used switch and tested the solenoids. One of them is faulty. Searching online I only see options around $400 apiece. Does it sound right? Will other land cruiser (60 series or Prado) vacuum solenoid work?

H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

All pieces seem to be in place. The solenoids are connected and the vacuum hoses are attached. How can I test the solenoids if they work without the switch?

H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

Thanks Alexy, that looks right. I’ll be in Europe from next week and search.

H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

Thanks but I’m in Africa. Nothing is quite easy here.

H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

What I’m discovering is that the connector is for another type of H4 switch. Does anyone have the Toyota part number for this:

H4 switch for electronic transfer case control on HZJ76

Recently I realized (while struck in 2 feet of mud) that my transfer case does not shift into 4WD. This cruiser (2002 HZJ76 Japanese market) is new to me and I never had a solenoid controlled transfer case before. After going nuts with the manual front hub locks, I took apart the dashboard...

    HZJ76 unstable rear

    Yes and yes.

    HZJ76 unstable rear

The leaf springs are pretty firm and even extra leaves were added. Not sure about the shocks, but they are not new for sure. The recent trip I did was mainly uploaded, but the idea is that with roof top tend, fridge, jerry cans and gear in the back, there would be an extra 200kg. I’ll check...

    HZJ76 unstable rear

Thanks and by dragging I mean that it feels the rear is “sliding” to one side or the other when cornering. It feels as if it drags the car off the road. The car is new to me as well as 76 series as I had a105 and a couple of 40 series before. Not getting and clanking noise that I can connect...

    HZJ76 unstable rear

I have noticed that the rear of my cruiser (2002 HZJ76) feels as if it was rolling or dragging the rear when cornering. Very unstable and uncomfortable feeling when cornering and had to slow down to 50km/h (30mph) otherwise I felt the car would roll off the road. The HZJ76 is relatively tall...

Speedometer issue - 1HZ with auto gearbox

Almost immediately as I start moving my speedometer in my HZJ76 (1HZ with auto gearbox) jumps to around 60km/h and stays there fairly steadily until the car comes to a full stop. It does not fluctuates or jumps around. At the same time, the RPM does not move at all and remains at 0. I tried to...

What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?

Replaced the old points in the distributor with a pertronix system. Did not work and car won't start though :(

Petronix installation - what am I missing?

Running out of ideas. Tomorrow I check if there is spark to the plugs so given that there’s flow through the coil, it must only be the distributor. Either misfiring or not firing at all. What else can go wrong inside of the distributor? How would I test the Petronix box itself?

Petronix installation - what am I missing?

There are 3 wires to the starter: + from battery, and 2 others from ignition switch I assume. The blue wire from the ignition coil looks as if it’s just bundles together with others and might be going to the ignition switch. I get pretty much the same voltage at the + terminal of the coil with...

Petronix installation - what am I missing?

The blue wire from the starter is only hot when key is ON. I get 12.5v between the Red terminal and ground with Key ON and 0v if Key is OFF. However, there is still no voltage between + and - of the coil with Key ON.

Petronix installation - what am I missing?

Did the Ohm test. I get 3.2 ohm between the terminals and 10,400 between the terminal and secondary. The Petronix specs are 3 ohm for the 12 V setup for my application. Rotor and ignitor are not touching. There is about 1mm gap between the magnet and the ignitor. Pulled the mash wire a bit so...
