Installation of 90 degree oil filter adapter on 1FZFE

Hi guys, another data point: I bought and installed this Ford Racing adapter to address the cold-start rattle on my '94 1FZ. I would say the rattle is reduced, but definitely not cured. I have not touched the tensioner yet, although maybe cleaning or replacement is next on the checklist. Just an...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

I finally made progress on my seats (well, one of them) a few weekends ago. I decided to try swapping to the manual 1991 FJ80 seats I've had in my attic for quite some time. Originally I wanted to put these cloth covers on my power seats, but those have been acting up lately. I'd prefer the...

Thanks for the compliments. Not sure which center caps you're asking about - I currently don't have any installed on the steelies. It's just the standard hubs that you see protruding through the center of the wheels. I do want to adapt some older Toyota center caps to complete the look, however!

Also, nice Saddam avatar. Nice marmot. An amphibious rodent...within city limits...that ain't legal either.

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Thanks, I appreciate it! The fender flares may be gone soon - they are in bad shape and there's some rust under the rears... You probably did see my 80 in San Diego. My parents live there and my dad was actually borrowing the truck for most of July. If it had Daily Turismo, Garrett, and "TEQ"...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

The next trip was over the long 4th of July weekend. We loaded up and met several sets of friends in the Sierras, east of Fresno, CA. The trail system was past Shaver Lake and near Huntington lake - turning off CA hwy 168 we drove in for almost two hours on dirt roads and trails to reach our...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Thanks - it was fun. We did more serious offroading over the 4th of July weekend, so I'll write up another trip report about that soon. Forgot to post this pic of a very clean Samurai that was for sale in Big Bear... After this trip, I replaced my reverse light bulbs with CREE LEDs...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Overdue trip reports! Over Memorial Day weekend we took the 80 up to Big Bear Lake, CA to stay in a big cabin with friends. Summer is the off season in this ski/snowboard town so rental rates were great, (almost) everyone brought a Toyota 4WD vehicle, and there were some nearby trails that we...

TurboClunker (a.k.a. cheap-ass slaps a turbo on his LX)

Thanks. Exploring the limits of the open loop calibration sounds fun!

TurboClunker (a.k.a. cheap-ass slaps a turbo on his LX)

Sorry if you've covered this earlier, but are you still using completely stock engine management? What about fuel pump and injectors? Seems promising, I bet it feels like a whole different animal now vs. stock!

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

That makes sense; thanks for the clarification. I haven't had a chance to go through your entire build thread yet; did you go with forged pistons and rods because of OE part failures or as a preventive measure? Very nice rig BTW!

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

For some reason I thought it had a forged crank, but my memory was obviously faulty... It's a 2002 with an Alpina badge on the grille ;-) That one is currently in the garage getting EFI, electronic ignition, and a GTX2860R turbo install.

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Thanks! I read through your build thread and engine rebuild thread. Awesome work - your 1FZ looks quite sharp! It was bringing back memories of a 22R rebuild I did a few years back; very extensive using mostly OE parts. It only had 2,000 miles on it and had been sitting since 1986 with crank and...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Next major change I made was rolling stock. Since I bought it, this 80 had stock 16" wheels with BFG ATs in 315/75R16 size (close to 35" diameter). While I liked the way the truck looked, acceleration was terrible with the larger tires and stock final drive gearing. 35s are overkill for the...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Catching up with past work done... In March of this year I did the standard front axle rebuild using parts obtained from cruiserdan. I can say it was great dealing with someone who was able to give me a complete parts list and at a competitive price. I've found online dealerships that charge...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

It's been running cold for about 6 months now with no apparent degradation, so if there is a leak it must be a very slow one. I was skeptical at first but had the AC manifold and extra refrigerant handy from another project, and figured it wouldn't hurt to try a simple recharge. Pleasantly...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Yeah, very strange damage for sure. I was wondering if it may have been bashed against a large rock, but your idea probably makes more sense. I didn't notice the damage until after I bought the truck, and didn't bother contacting the PO to ask about it. I'll source a replacement pan at some...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Thanks for the compliments; must be nice to have a known baseline for everything maintenance wise. I'm getting to that point now, but not there yet. The cooling system is next on my hit list. I noticed a small weep from the water pump over Memorial Day weekend after some offroading. The...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

The AC never really kept the interior cool in this thing in 2012/2013, especially on uphill grades and desert trips. In early 2014 I noticed that the floorboards were getting extremely hot during full load driving, and thought some of the OE exhaust heat shields must be missing. I got the truck...

    El Duderino's 1994 FZJ80 - The Crusher

Do it! Always better to get this stuff written down somewhere instead of just floating around in the mental queue (for me anyway). For maintenance and repairs on this truck I started with some simple jobs back in 2012. First thing was getting the OE battery bracket and bolting it down - the...
