I was on the Rubicon August 14 with my 72 FJ40. I met a guy at Buck Island Saturday evening in a nicely set up Tacoma who was pretty much SOL with a blown rear pinion and cracked xfer case due to a less than ideal straight axle conversion. He JB welded the xfer case so at least he had front...
I have them and absolutely hate them out of the box. It felt like the axles were bolted to the frame on city streets. My FJ40 does not have a hard top or rear seats, but it does have the hard doors installed, 8k lb warn winch, 32" tires. After numerous tries I ended up with this combination...
Use a small ball peen hammer to cut out gaskets. Turn the part upside down, lay the gasket material over the part, and tap around the edges with the hammer. Use the ball side of the hammer to cut/punch the bolt holes.
Don't hit gear reduction starters with a hammer, you can break the...
For spraying the hood and doors, you might want to have a pan of hot water to warm up the cans when they get start to get cold from spraying for extended times. When the cans get too cold, they loose some pressure and the spray pattern suffers. If you get several cans, you could alternate...
I ran into the same problem when I put a 4 speed into my 72 FJ40. I ended up bending the front lip of the skid plate down and welding an extension under the xfer case / parking brake drum.
I bought a 4 speed skid plate but it doesn't seem to fit right, the shape is very different and it's...
You can't use the factory pump and bracket with a 73 block because it doesn't have the mounting holes in the block. If your steering column doesn't have a rag joint, you can fit a later model steering column (with a shortened shaft) with some mods to the firewall.
I got it from SOR with a 10 spline output shaft that mated directly to my 3 speed transfer case. It's an Australian 4 speed with a granny (4.95:1) 1st gear. It's not as low as the SM465, but quite nice IMHO. Driving it around town I use 2nd (with 32" tires) for starting out since it's a little...
If you're lucky you have the collapsing shaft. Mine was sold. It's not a big deal to cut and weld it if you don't. Are they still available from Toyota?
I tried my FJ40 out at the local 4x4 park this weekend and it's so easy to drive now it's boring! It's a toss up whether the PS or the...
Check your slave cylinder adjustment and bleed any air that may be in the system. It may be wishful thinking, but it's not uncommon for a clutch to be adjusted so tight that it slips. Drive it around until it's slipping and see if you can wiggle the clutch fork. If it's tight, then try...
My 79 with the same setup drives like a car now. In some ways the PS ruined the character of the FJ40, I sort of liked the heavy steering except for rare occasions on the rocks when it became almost impossible to turn the wheel or when the wheel snapped back sending my left arm into the door...
Thanks for the ideas. Welding new nuts in place would be ideal, but I'd have to clean out all the old mud, dirt and rocks out of the channel first. I'm thinking of trying some nutserts, the bad thing is I'd have to drill the holes out to a 1/2" in order to use a 5/16 in bolt. I'll probably...
Besides different advance curves and larger cap to prevent arcing, what is the difference between using a GM HEI distributor and using a Flamethrower, Pertronix or MSD high energy coil with a late model Toyota distributor? Is the placement of the coil in the cap that much more efficient than...
If the box is already in good shape, it's not hard to do it yourself since you won't have to mess with the valve body and the new housing comes with a new cross shaft needle bearing already installed. Just be careful not to let the power piston come apart or else you will have a million ball...
How about "braking" in reverse with wet brakes and a stalled engine on Cadillac Hill? If I didn't let the clutch out (in 1st gear) when I was rolling backwards I'd be toast.
One good thing about the 72 is the crossmember in back of the transfer case doesn't need to be relocated...
