We ran pretty much this same system with the addition of a pump at our house in Sarajevo and it worked pretty well. The city water would only be on sporadically, but when it was on it filled the storage tanks.

I think you nailed it with the sneaker comment. What has been talked about here are more old school, full leather hiking boots with a stitched on sole that is more or less easily re-soled. I expect to get many years of service out of my Limmers and I would expect much the same out of the Alicos...
I wouldn't laugh at them. The Cresta was on my very short list when I needed to replace my Meindl boots. The final deciding factor was that I really like a leather lining.
