Swapping front axle from drums to disc

I imagine its just like the canadian spec late 70's FJ45's. Keep any good brake hardware from the front for spares. The shoes are wider than 40's use and are very pricey. The drums themselves are also bigger and cast with cooling fins. Backing plates are different but are interchangeable...

    Fairey Overdrive 3 Speed

Choice A also involves using parts you already own. Minimal mods if you want to stay relatively stock. If your happy with driving a three speed then stay with it. But those five speeds sure are nice...

Question on Rear FF Axle Hub Install

If you feel you need to replace the seal it is easy to knock out of the nut and replace. I don't remember from when I replaced mine but I think it was a different seal then the front axle inner seal. Ordered mine from the local Toyota dealer. Now whether you really 'must' replace these seals...

    Check out this stocker '40...

Wow, that truck is nice. I didn't realize they had changed to the newer style dash without windsheild latches and with the padding by '68. Was expecting it to look alot more like my '66.

    Body Lift Vs Suspension Lift

Might not be easy to find replacement 33's in some of the countries you be traveling though. Might not need replacements but driving loaded on rough roads could mean one spare won't be enough. Maybe look at the setups common to the countries you'd be in. A 7.5x16 ten ply will likely be...

    toyota wheels that fit hj60?

Maybe its just the 60's fj40 rims. Dunno. The centers are smaller, like ~12" vs ~13" on the newer rims that fit. I think you are correct that it was the rivets causing the interference. On the disk axle you could mount the wheels but only turn them maybe 30 deg before it hit. I use them as...

    toyota wheels that fit hj60?

Uhh, my early 15" drum brake rims don't have hubcap clips and they dont fit disk brake axles. They don't even fit over the big 45 drum brakes. That said rims after '76 should fit no problem, but they're only 5.5" wide until the 80's. Don't know about the newer stuff tho.

    flex?

I agree with Mace. The axle is still unsprung regardless of whether above or below the spring. There is a small increase in leverage by soa axle position. Mostly the advantage is room for uptravel on a comparably soft flat spring. For a lift spring to keep its arch under the truck it has to...

    fj40 and fj25 similarities

I know the rear springs were much longer with the spring hanger being on the flat part of the frame towards the t-case. Are they the same 52" long centered pins springs as used on 45's? Are the front springs not the same as on 40's???

    What are the biggest tires?

I've seen 38.5x11x15 swampers on stock rims :flipoff2: Someone was using it as a fullsize spare!

    12.5 on 7X16 possible?

Thanks Dude, real nice trucks you have. I was thinking of that same setup of split rims and the 255/85 trxus mt's. Now to track down a set of split rims ;p

    12.5 on 7X16 possible?

Dude, could you post a pic of a 40 on that combo, I've been thinking about going that way on my 40. Wondering how well they fit the rear fenders. Thanks

    Factory looking FJ45 1978 rims

Well the few 45's I've seen still on split rims didn't have hubcaps. A brochure I think pimp posted once of the '78 Canadian spec FJ40, FJ45, and FJ55 showed no hubcaps on the 45. It came with 7.5x16 tires so very close to 33x9.5, but perhaps a bit skinnier.

    Parabolic Suspension

Besides the leaves being spaced apart from each other so they only contact at the spring pad and eyes, they seem to be the same idea as was used on domestic fullsize p/u's front suspensions. A half ton chev also has two leaves, full length, thick in center but tapered towards the ends. They...

Will a V6 dist. work on and I6 engine?

Since the 4.3L V6 is a shortened 350, I suspect it won't work. I looked at a V8 housing and it was larger diameter where it plugs into the block. The shaft was the same diameter but the length/height was different. So couldn't swap in the I6 guts to make work. I guess if the housing was...

This is a brake booster leaking vacuum, right?

My truck doesn't have a booster, but all power brake setups I've seen have a valve at the end of the vacuum hose that plugs into the booster. Pull that valve out and try if it isn't leaking. you should only be able to suck air thru it one way, not the other. Those valves are dirt cheep and I...

    crawlerboxes

How is the orion when considering long term, lots of mileage? Is it quiet on the road? Does the machining and quality of the gears look like they will stand up to say 200k miles without undue wear? A crawl box is nice because in 1:1 it doesn't have to transfer power through its gearsets, just...

    proper shock angles

The suspension IS almost at full droop. The shocks are well aligned now but the axle centerline will move back quite a bit as the spring is compressed. The bushings can only accomodate so much missalignment. If left alone it will either wear those bushings out quick or maybe damage the...

    Setting in a sm420/3speed

If your using a plate adapter between the 420 and the t-case it rotates the t-case downward by over an inch. So you will be losing a lot of clearance if you also tilt the rear output down. Maybe not a big deal after SOA, but crappy breakover angle until then.

    F engine fan blades

Interesting, my steel fan on the '66 is orange. I always assumed that it was original. Its not all bad since it wont flex as much when it starts slapping water. I'd change it for a fan clutch style plastic fan though if theres one to fit the old waterpump
