The rear floors are 20ga. I have played with 18ga, but you get much crisper lines in the 20ga and it is easier to straighten out the warping. The floors have held up fine (not like I haul gravel in it) neither my dog nor any of the gear I have tossed back there have caused any damage.
Ok, so over a year later, here we are. Just under 5k on the clock now and I have driven it daily except when there is salt on the road. It drives smoothly over 80 mph, but is happiest in the 70-75 range. No wandering, no bump steer, although a good bump in the road makes the springy seat bounce...

I wasn't a fan of the velcro strip to secure the rear window, so I slid some neodymium magnets into the loop strip on the window and had the wife put a stich between them to keep them separated. I originally tried 10mm round magnets, thinking I could have a nice continuous strip of magnet, but...
I went with 33x10.5r15 BFGs on my 40, which seems to be a popular choice. A buddy has 255/85/16 Toyos on his Tacoma and they are a little taller and a little skinnier, but $100 more per tire.
If you want the ultimate pizza cutter tire, Interco still makes a 38.5x11-15 Bogger....
That link is missing some info if you have the "locking" gasket. If you have the locking gasket, you need a Lisle 47000 tool or similar (I made my own out of a cheap screwdriver with some 1/8" rod welded to it).
1. Soak the lock and the gasket with plenty of soapy water.
2. The windshield...
Does it noticeably burn oil? At that rate, it seems like it should.
Do you have a PCV system? If so, check it for signs of excessive oil, possibly swap it out for breathers to isolate the issue.
An intake manifold gasket leak can also cause oil consumption like you are experiencing. With...
The front and rear spring hangers I made and the shackle ends are OEM.
Tire carriers tend to just get in my way. Plug kit and compressor in the tool box are all the spare I need. I did consider mounting a couple jerry cans on the back (V8 and 16 gal tank), but we'll see.
A couple daylight photos. Drove it a bit more yesterday and I am getting some erratic readings in the speedo and passenger seatback squeaks enough to drive you nuts, but neither is impossible to fix. I also need to finish the front driveshaft.
Yeah, right!
I hustled all weekend to get to this point, and didn't stop to take photos. Here is what got done:
Seat frames sandblasted and painted, new foam and CruiserCorps covers
Roll bar sandblasted, shoulder belt mounts welded in, painted and installed
wipers installed and wired
new...
Carbs cannot adjust to changes in air temp or altitude, so they are generally jetted on the rich side from the factory, especially if you are at a higher altitude. Also, ethanol gas is not going anywhere, and even small amounts of ethanol like E10 requires richer jetting to reach a stoich...
I have never been a fan of PCV valves, especially in a carburetor application. With EFI, the computer can compensate for any failure of the pcv valve, but the carburetor relies on all the airflow going through it and not bypassing. I have a Weber 38/38 on a 20R and the valve cover vents to a...
Here is my "adapter box" that connects the FJ40 parking brake cable (on the left) to the two cables for the eldorado calipers (on the right). Since the mechanical advantage lever is built into the parking brake handle (using the stock one) instead of somewhere under the vehicle (like a Toyota...
I replaced the round reflectors on the fender aprons with these LED marker lights: Sealed, Mini LED Side Marker, Clearance or Identification Light, 2 Wire, 2 Diode - Amber Optronics Trailer Lights MCL13A2B and wired them into the turn signal circuit. First and foremost, this was a safety move...
Here is a link to the heater (made by Maradyne): Summit Racing® Automotive Heaters SUM-991101-1
This is the defroster kit: Summit Racing® Heater Defroster Kits SUM-991104-2
The heater is a 3-speed and includes a rotary switch. I didn't like the switch that came with it, so mine is hooked up to...
