Yep, definitely have to crank the fuel screw. I was running the stock exhaust and tuned it via the pyrometer to max 1200F. Once I knocked the restrictive exhaust off I had trouble getting it to 1000F pushing it as hard as I could up the hills.
I get some oil blow by at the turbo because I've never gotten around to putting a restrictor at the oil feed and I'm pushing too much pressure into it. Other than that, no issues.
As someone who has spent a lot of time with this Cruiser, I gotta say it's an amazing beast.
I'll have to try and find the pics and video but it's astounding how quickly the 6BT get's those tires moving.
It's a constant source of amusement to watch the reaction of other enthusiasts when they...
I've got some electrical gremlins that appear to be caused by a bad ground, but I haven't been able to find it yet.
When I step on my brakes my right signal indicator light and right side signal lights come on.
Also the heater slows and there is a load that is visible on the ammeter.
The...
I'm about 100k into my total elcheapo conversion. Now over 450k total on the 3b. Haven't opened it up yet.
Rebuilt turbo once (it was used). A couple oil leaks and had to replace a heater hose that I had routed badly.
It's been great. The big CT26 isn't optimal but it was available, cheap...
even a hillbilly turbo setup will be the best bang for your buck. Wire the waste gate shut and don't worry about an intercooler. It can be a weekend install if you've got all the right parts lined up ahead of time.
So here's something I've never had to fiddle with and know very little about - The EDIC.
Just this week my 60 hiccuped a few times. Normal power, then a click of the EDIC solenoid along with a full loss of power hiccup. Happened a few times in a row, then ran normally.
I didn't observe...
With a bit of creative grinding you can get an early alternator to fit into the late model 60 power steering.
If I recall correctly I flipped the alt bracket and extended the adjustment slot.
Also knocked off some of the corner on the alt so it had enough clearance.
Bit of a pain in the...
From a Supra. It's the big version of the CT-26.
Like I've said before, not optimal according to the specs, but I've been really happy with the performance.
I did have a T-25 but on the appointed weekend to do the install I discovered that I had the wrong adapter and the CT-26 was rapidly...
Hi,
I do that drive pretty often in my 60. Having the turbo makes a huge difference.
I'm running the CT-26 out of the Supra. It's not optimal for trail but it rocks on the highway.
I'm running 33's on stock diffs and only drop out of 5th for the biggest hills.
It's probably safe to assume that anyone who'd take the time to do that clean of a diesel swap would also take the time to find a 3B with a reasonable amount of mileage on it.
Power steering pump - replaced mine a couple years ago courtesy of 4 wheel auto. $300 for a rebuilt. Drove it for...
I think it depends on what market your BJ60 was built for.
I'm pretty sure that all the Canadian market BJ60s were 12 volt.
How are your batteries wired up? If it's positive to positive (parallel) then the system is 12 volt.
If your two batteries are wired Positive to Negative (series)...
It should tell you that lots of us enjoy reading Dougal's explanations of turbo theory, plus your defense of using superchargers just adds a comical twist to the whole thing.
Great work Kevin. It's inspiring to see your progress.
I'd be happy to volunteer my services as garage go-fer for an evening just so I could see your working methods.
You could consider it customer training as I'm sure I'll be sourcing some panels from you when I fix up my 40.
There are at least a couple guys driving 60s with the 6.2/6.5 who are real happy with them. Do a search in the diesel forum and you'll find a bunch of info.
I thought long and hard about doing a similar conversion. If you're already setup for a small block chev then it seems a no brainer...
