I don't have first hand experience, just what I've read. Thinking about this a few years down the road when I've got some more time and money.
Cummins B3.3 Powered FJ60
How about the cummins 3.3. I've seen a few nice write-ups and the kicker is you can get a brand new engine with easier parts support for about the same cost as a used Toyota.
Has she smogged it within the last 90 days? That's also a big issue in CA and is supposed to be the seller's responsibility.
If it passes smog, sounds pretty sweet for 2k. Rust free is the most important thing.
I think the biggest concern is always rust. Most on the forum would agree that they feel better fixing mechanical issues one by one than dealing with rust. Doesn't sound like it should have much, but you didn't mention that.
The next big thing, especially if you live in CA is smog. It's...
So...dragging up an old thread. I have been driving around since Feb without tuning my carb. It hasn't started well in the morning but once warm has been running well.
Today I spent some time tinkering around and figured out that when I put my choke back together, I hadn't wound the spring...
Well, I finished up the rebuild and everything went very well. I've been drivng the 86 truck for about a week now and didn't even have to make any adjustments once installed. I need to poke around a bit to figure out why it doesn't want to start in the morning, but once started, it runs great...
I'm wondering if anyone knows if jets can be bought for the stock aisin carbs. I've just finished disassmebling the carb from my 86 22r and the secondary jet was so gouged up that I almost couldn't get a screwdriver to bite, but I did finally get it out. I can't read any numbers on it so I'm...
I'd go w56. If I remember correctly from an old post on another forum, the guru Marlin claimed them to be about 20% stronger than G52. Or go all out and go for the R151, but beware that it is hard to find as it only came in 1986 and 87 turbo pick ups.
I can't wait to see the finished product and driving impressions. Are you leaving the engine stock in terms of turbo and boost? Also I'm assuming you're using the Isuzu swaps adapter and then a Chevy to Toyota adapter behind that?
I recently bought a used carb off of a member here and want to try to rebuild it myself. I've done a few 22r carbs, but this will be the first time I've tackled a LC carb.
So I'm looking to by the most comprehensive kit so that I don't get my carb all disassembled and have to stop and wait...
12k is a pretty big budget, but I think that you're thinking is wrong here. I think you'd be much better off splitting your money and using 6k to buy a reliable vehicle that can haul your fam in, station wagon, mini van? And use the other 6k to fix you're cruiser...if you want to work on it...
Thanks tclark, that helps me out a bunch. Had mine pull out while driving in the neighborhood today and couldn't quite figure out how the retainer pin attached.
Don't know about where to find the cleanest vehicles. But as far as driving on the other side, you'll quickly get used to it. When I came home after 2 months in NZ and OZ, I had to readjust to our side and kept hitting the wipers every time I wanted to make a turn.
Thanks for the replies and advice. I will check timing and idle again after some drive time. I'm guessing that screwing the air/fuel screw in makes it leaner and out richer?
On the long term, I've already bought a used carb from a member here and am planning to send it out to Jim C. or Mark...
I've been hanging around here for quite a while, eying all the amazing 60's and finally got myself one. I've previously owned an '85 pick up, '85 4runner and '86 pickup, but finally felt the need to upgrade to the big leagues.
A couple of weeks ago I picked up this late '85 FJ60 with 189k on...
I don't think that anyone mention regearing your diff's. That will give you the biggest bang for the buck if you still have stock gears and 33's. I'd go with 4.88's or at least 4.56's for the extra torque, if you can live with a lower top speed, which may actually faster on the hills than...
