My front end has deteriorated can you help me name the usual suspects.

True. Mine is all stock though.

I agree, but I'm stumped by the difficulty. Gonna sit on it for a while and see if I can hide the problem otherwise. I do believe it would be the key satisfying change to get it done. Maybe try angling my air hammer in and thinking about in place replacement strategies. The 100's have an on...

Yeah I did that today. It's about 1/4 or 3/8 inch movement and you can see a crack in the rubber around each bushing open up when extending in either direction. Not like a deep crack or a rotted out look, but a crack nonetheless. Very inconclusive result. Not great, not terrible.

Yeah I looked at it more today and I'm giving up. Easier to try and treat the alignment balance and brake triggers than to go after these bushings.

This may be basic knowledge to some of you, but I'll add my notes here for the public anyway: FJ Cruisers, 5th Gen 4Runners, the GX 460, and of course the Prado 150 all share this rack design it is mostly the same beast on all of them. It's possible that the 460's V8 packaging makes it the...

I'm an intermediate shade tree mechanic, I'm familiar with most suspension work done from the side of a vehicle, and I managed the valley leak repair, but I've never got into the heavy stuff like moving the transmission or diff. Cutting bolts is apparently already an accepted practice for...

The 10-12 steering flutter TSB details a rack removal method by removing the front diff and jacking the motor up like you do for the LCA's. There is one first hand report online of a replacement by deflecting the diff and the motor without removing either. Yeah I better hope it's not rack...

FSM procedure for steering rack removal: 1. Straighten front wheels. 2. Remove front wheels. 3. Remove engine. Yikes.

I'm quite sure that I have an excessive movement somewhere, in a ball joint or a control arm or some bushings or a rod end, etc. And probably in multiple of the above. The experience is like a rattling, not a little rattle but a rattling motion of major weight bearing components. Alignment...

I don't drive on any of those. But it shakes the steering column on regular pavement without any brake application.

I went ahead and jumped the gun and ordered some superpro rack bushings. I've thrown wrong parts at problems before so I'm aware of the pitfalls. But I'm confident no matter what the outcome I'll enjoy having a stiffer rack. Hopefully at the expense of time and frustration with a hacksaw and...

My front end has deteriorated can you help me name the usual suspects.

Reading over some steering rack reports I have a feeling this is going to be the primary culprit. It explains how completely s***ty it's acting. I've encountered little things with little symptoms than can be isolated and this isn't that. It's broad general looseness and steering rack bushings...

Thank you guys. I will examine the wheel bearings. Ball joints I thought would be a given as part of the LCA. But maybe I need to get more familiar. That intermediate shaft sounds like exactly what part of my knock is coming from and I'll look into that. It really bugs me even when the rest of...

120k 2014 GX460 all stock. Over the last 20k miles I have developed what I personally know as "Toyota truck s***ty front end syndrome". I don't know if there really is a universal syndrome, but I do know that I have observed similar symptoms on various 4runners, Tacomas, and now my GX. It...

Do you check the acid levels? You pop the caps off and top them up with distilled water. It's usually ignored in other climates but the water might be evaporating there.

Ok mine is done! No check engine light and not pissing coolant out the bottom. TBD if my flange job holds tight, I was not able to lay as clean a bead as OP. Huge huge thanks to you @jmanscotch for the excellent write up. You are the people that make the internet great. Without it I would not...

    DIY Coolant Valley Leak Repair

I used this stuff and it worked well enough. Didn't check too thoroughly for coolant compatibility but it's just silicone and I'm not too worried about distant coolant quality concerns right now, I can always flush it later. Now that I see the compatibility chart is good for everything except...

I disturbed the rear connection on the coolant bypass pipe before I realized it can just be moved out of the way. Now I'm not sure if it needs to be replaced to be sure of it. I've ordered the hose but the rear connection by the firewall is going to be tricky.
