Help on "how to set the preload on FJ40 TC rear output shaft"

We got the dual seal installed, new shims, and a speedie sleeve. It all felt snug with no wobble. Now 20 miles later a drip from the ebake. Darn it. I am guessing it's the bearing. There was a lot of slivery dust on the drain plug. Any thoughts on TC rebuilding on your own vs. Swap out for...

Help on "how to set the preload on FJ40 TC rear output shaft"

I have it apart. The lead was at the bottom of the recent new seal. I ordered the Dual Seal Hosing from Georg at Valley Hybrid, and plan to reinstall with the next size up shim.

Help on "how to set the preload on FJ40 TC rear output shaft"

Background: My 1978 FJ40 4spd rear TC output shaft/ebrake has slop and leaks. (Truck as 48K miles) A new OEM seal and FIG (Form a Gasket) on the splines + Speedy Sleeve did not fit the leak. I read on the forum that either the bearing is worn or out of spec. HOW DO I CONFIRM THIS? My...

Sniper 2F Cooling Fan - Wired? or Not?

I am going down the Sniper EFI road and so far, so good. :) The forum posts across all models have been super helpful. Will probably created a "lessons learned" post when I am done. Lot;s of TLC specific issues (Vacuum - Fuel - Mechanical - Electric) + Operational / Tuning. More to come...

    1978 FJ40 Shutters...only in Reverse. Any ideas?

The official term is "Judder". Seems to happen on old rusty flywheels and clutch plates. THX CRZR45 great idea. I learned that slipping the clutch in 2nd or 3rd will eventually clean it up...and it did!! Took about 30 minutes of slip driving and it smooth now. On to the next issue.

    1978 FJ40 Shutters...only in Reverse. Any ideas?

Great idea, will check it. The FJ was stuck in a river for a day or two, then pulled out, dryed out and drove to and stored in a barn in 1984. So a sticky clutch is possible. I keep thinking the issue is the Tranny or TC. My FJ buddies tell these can take alot of HP/Torque, they where...

    1978 FJ40 Shutters...only in Reverse. Any ideas?

Looking for any ideas on how to best diagnose this issue. Background: Recent Barn find 42K Miles Original. It barely ran as a back it out the driveway, hit the brakes and the rear drums locked up, I gassed it and skidded the rear wheel 15', then drove fwd into garage. Time for teardown...
