Thanks, elhombre. I appreciate the help and will post my results (will no sooner than the end of the week as I'm traveling this week).
Yeah, no abuse since I've owned it. Any damage to the axle would've been under the previous owner and more likely a result of collision than offroading...
Can you tell me more about this test? And the fix?
I'd be really relieved to find that it's something that can be fixed without doing a major / expensive replacement.
I've had it for about a year. The last set of tires was more worn on the rear, but I didn't think much of it at the time (doh!).
Stock.
No pictures available as she's locked inside the shop.
A week ago I noticed that the inside edge of my rear tires on my '97 LX 450 is worn down past the tread after only about 12K miles. I hadn't noticed in the past, probably because the cladding and mud flaps kept me from seeing the inside edge clearly.
The first shop that I took it to said...
Thanks, everyone, for all of the great info.
Is this screw plug the location for greasing the birfs? I looked for it this weekend and wasn't sure if I was looking for a zerk or a bolt. How can I make a positive ID before I start pumping grease in the wrong place?
The yokes are clearly...
I hadn't seen anyone saying that red might not be good. Doesn't really matter right now because they're going to use gold - solid gold, baby! I'm guessing that's the same thing as orange all purpose. They warranty the work for 2 years or 24K.
Atticus, I don't know if I can handle it or not. This will be the first one that I attempt. It sounds relatively straightforward, but I might reach out for some help.
I'm actually at Rob'E Mans in Homewood. I'm only sold if it's a fair deal - I'll push on the thermostat price.
What are your thoughts on the valve cover & plugs? Am I OK to wait a few days . . . or more?
informationjunky, thanks for the input. I'm probably tighter than you, and I'd love...
I wound up getting my truck towed to a certified Lex / Toyota service center yesterday. They come very highly recommended.
The good news is that it looks like my HG is sound!!
They've told me that my radiator is shot. The cost for parts / service to replace is $940.
Replacing the...
Well, I had to leave town on a business trip before dawn this morning. So my truck will either sit in the driveway until Thursday or my wife will take it to get checked out before I get home.
I've got a few questions from the posts above:
- Powderpig
How do I know when the...
OK, I'm back from the blazing friggin hot parking lot.
Turns out that a dealership that's on the way to where the rig was parked had the needed belts. Thanks, CDan for the parts numbers. I've read a bunch of the write ups on changing the belts, and I've got to say that it's a significant job...
Thanks again, everybody. I really appreciate the help.
I'll start with the dealers and get the belts replaced.
Let me add that I've had my LX for about three months after wanting one for years. This website makes it a lot less scary to have a problem like this.
Thanks again.
Thanks to everyone else for answering, too. I didn't see the replies until the webpage refreshed with my post.
OEM belts will be added asap. My question above is limited to, 'how do I limp home on a Saturday?'
Turbo, thanks for the quick response. A couple of additional questions.
First, in this (https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/121364-second-belt-location.html) thread, it says that I can run with one belt. Can you confirm this? Would I be better off with one belt or going to the AutoZone...
I was driving home yesterday when I heard a strange noise. As I started looking for a good place to pull over and check it out, I noticed the red light at the top right of the instrument cluster. Then, as I pulled into a parking lot, I overheated big time - steam blowing everywhere.
When I...
I'm looking at an '82 FJ60 that has 148,000 original miles. The owner is asking $5,200.
I was not shopping for a 60, but this one caught my eye. I need a new daily driver that can handle some mild offroading (hunting in an area with generally decent roads). I do not want a vehicle that will...
