Right now is a great time to take a shot at it from the Tahoe side, only a few feet of snow instead of ten.
There is no gate (yet) but usually the local plow guy/loader operator gets a little carried away with the snow bank at the begining of the road to the staging area. Not a problem right...
Which side of the ring gear are you measuring?
I've got a gearset here that is out of an 8" diff, measures 7.5" across the carrier mounting surface and 8" across the face of the gear.
I don't know the Toy dually too well but I can't imagine they went to the smaller ring and pinion for that...
Wheel bearings probably.
Jack up the front of the runner, check for play on vertical axis of tires.
If someone had the hubs off for brake work, there is a chance something was missed.
Check the front diff fluid after that, bad carrier bearings can make similiar noises.
Good luck with it!
Dood! It's just practice for when something takes a crap,
in the middle of nowhere,
at 10:30....PM,
it's raining,
and you've got a flathead screwdriver, a pipe wrench, one beer, and a bag of Doritos (the .99 cent kind) to fix it with.
:D
Pride and glory! All can be yours if you build it fully custom!
First time around is far easier with all the parts fabbed and measured by someone else, but then it looks like everyone elses too..
I did my SAS on my 93 when there were less complete kits than available now, so I ended up...
Starters, alternators, lotsa rebuilt crap coming out of your local parts outfit.
You can spend HOURS chasing a problem after installing a faulty rebuild.
Replaceable starter selenoid contacts............
HAPPY NEW YEAR:cheers:
Not knowing the exact history of the engine and finding a missing thermostat is definitely a red flag. Usually a quick fix for someone who knows how to take things apart but doesn't know the "why".
Can't fix the overheating problem?
"Hell, just take that 'stat outta there and she'll run...
I've had times when it's taken a half hour just to get a small amount of action at the master when installing a new unit. Helps to have someone run the pedal while you crack open the lines at the master.
Takes some patience.
Bench bleeding involves a lot less mess for sure (less chance of paint...
Hey!
My name is Mack.
I moved to the Tahoe area in 99' from VT and have spent the bulk of those years building up my 93' pickup.
I have owned three FJ-40's, 71', 74', and a 76' and miss them all (except for the 71 with it's gypsy wagon replacement wood tub)
My wife and I are moving to Reno...
Hey all.....
Decided to drop out of lurker mode and start making myself useful.
Been living in Truckee for a buncha years now, moving off the hill.
Buying a house, having a baby, keeping the wheeler.
Going to miss the quick and easy snow wheeling trips.
Happy Holidays everyone...
RMP...
You didn't mention what year your ride is. 2nd gen?
Might want to grab a light and take a look under the dash.
After awhile the pedal cluster ( pivots and mounting ) can fatigue and start to come apart.
Check out the firewall too for damage.

Sounds like the spacer is the culprit. If you look at site that 2ndGen posted up, it shows that there is a bearing difference between the 85 and older and the 86 and newer.
I've set up a few thirds with customer supplied parts...... early gears don't like 86 and up bearing kits. The reverse of...
