HDFT Owners - Question About Intake Heater

Its the way they are. They are also prone to the solenoid that switches power to it falling apart and catching fire. The solenoid is mounted under the right hand battery tray, if you don't live in a really cold place take it out.

It may be the manifold heater being on that keeps the voltage down, they draw a lot of power.

Builds Mail Order Ride - My HDJ81

On the HDJ alternators that are series parallel they have a specific regulator as the main battery feed goes to the l/h battery and gets 24v when cranking. If the incorrect regulator is used they will charge but the warning lights stay on. This may be an issue with fitting other alternators, but...

Builds Mail Order Ride - My HDJ81

There are 2 different alternators on these, the difference physically is the distance center to center between top and bottom mounts which is about 5mm different. Only way to check is to have both alternators on the bench and measure them. You could try removing the top bolt and them put the...

My 1st HDJ81 Couple of Questions

My JDM Vx limited has power retract and it is totally awesome on tight trails. I 2nd doing the BEB as soon as possible, I checked mine at 139,000kms and number 2 had a piece of bearing material missing about a quarter inch diameter. The rest only had really minor pitting.

Can someone explain what the lines running to my alternator are?

If you leave that alt on there do not remove the oil lines. The rear housing on them does not have a bearing, it is a bronze bush that is oiled buy the vac pump supply.

Unrestricted 12v supply to an 11v plug?

It is to help the engine burn cleaner until it warms up. I have seen some engines without it or with it no longer connected miss after start up and smoke if left idling on cold starts.

Unrestricted 12v supply to an 11v plug?

An 11v plug is designed to have 12v applied to it. The lower rated voltage is so that the plug heats quickly, the rule of thumb we use at work is an 11v plug at 12v will take 11 seconds to heat or a 6.5v ceramic plug will take 6.5 seconds. You will only burn them out if you keep power applied...

    Diesel run on

The only part of a 1HD-FT that was 24 volt was the starter all other bits are 12 volt. I would pull the solenoid out and check that the plunger and spring are clean and move freely.

    Alternator Tachometer Install

You should be able to run it off the neutral wire out of the alternator. It is one of the wires in the 3 pin plug, to check which one it is use a voltmeter and check the 3 wires. The wire with 7 volts with you engine running is the neutral, the other 2 are field and earth.

Help with installing alt. with vacuum pump

Only 3 things will let oil out the top, wrong direction of rotation, pump impeller or vanes not turning or damaged, or a blocked drain.

Help with installing alt. with vacuum pump

Have you got a pic of it? Oil supply should go into the center of the vac pump and drain out the bottom, Vacuum connection on the top. The oil is what seals the vanes in the pump to allow the creation of vacuum and there is no seal to prevent oil coming out the vacuum port. If oil is coming out...

AC / Defrost - won't blow hot air

Get a helper to move the hot/cold slide from cold to hot while you watch the heater tap on the fire wall and see if it moves. If not pull the glove box out and look in towards the top center of the heater box and you should just see the electric servo that moves the blend door and also pulls the...

93 cruiser, center diff lock switch, was working, now nothing

I repaired one of these at work last week that had nothing when the switch was pressed. It was the limit switch contacts in the CDL actuator that had oxidised and had no circuit. Without the limit switch there is no circuit to activate the relays in the control module so it wont even click.
